What is the difference between Artist In Residence vs Art Educator?
| Aspect | Artist In Residence | Art Educator |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Portfolio, artistic experience, sometimes a degree | Teaching certification, degree in art education or related field |
| Work Environment | Art studios, galleries, museums, community spaces | Schools, community centers, museums, educational institutions |
| Employer & Industry | Arts organizations, cultural institutions, universities | Educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, arts programs |

Student Services and Enrollment Management's mission is to build a diverse, exceptional, and inclusive campus community. The person in this role will work toward this mission in the following ways: Illustrate efforts at awareness and implementation with other individuals in the workplace; act as an advocate to assure efforts toward best practices, including support of trainings and serving as a resource for inquiries; act as a supporter to implement policy and/or establish procedures or guidelines for their school/college or VP area/Division; and act as a supporter to implement and/or establish procedures or guidelines for the University.
University Housing, a department within the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management, is committed to supporting student success by cultivating inclusive communities. Our goal is to provide a robust living experience through accessible and affordable state-of-the-art housing, dining, social and academic programs for the entire student body to develop community leaders, innovators and change-makers who will enrich the future.
We value equity and inclusion, responsibility and integrity, innovation and learning, and safety and security. University Housing staff work hard to incorporate these values into daily work and practices to ensure an excellent UO experience.
University Housing units, which include Business Services Operations, Dining Services, Facilities Services, Promotions & Student Recruitment, and Residence Life. University Housing is a $110-million dollar educational and business department that is a self-sustaining, self-liquidating agency of the University (receives no tuition or tax support for its operating budget).
Living on campus adds tremendous value for students and the University. Students who live on campus their first year have higher grades, are retained at the University of Oregon at higher rates, graduate at higher rates and graduate more quickly.
The Assistant Director (AD) of Residence Life is a strategic leader responsible for the stewardship of a flourishing residential ecosystem, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the residence halls and the supervision of a multi-tiered team of professional Officers of Administration and student workers. This role is centrally defined by its leadership of a primary functional area (50%): Community Care and Crisis Response. In direct alignment with the Oregon Rising strategic plan, the AD architects a community where the "educational priority" is realized: ensuring residents who live on campus thrive by engaging in and creating just communities. This work is grounded in five residence life learning goals-cultural competence, wellbeing, integrated learning, relationships in community, and responsibility-which serve as the metrics for student flourishing and resilience.
As a vital member of the Residence Life Leadership Team, the Assistant Director is entrusted with fostering an environment of intellectual and social stimulation by actively drawing upon the vast resources of the University of Oregon as a premier research institution. The AD moves beyond traditional departmental boundaries to cultivate high-impact, strategic relationships with campus partners to ensure that the residential experience serves a clear pathway to timely graduation. By de-siloing student information between Housing and campus partners, the AD lowers institutional barriers, ensuring that individual student support is more effective, holistic, and data-informed.
The AD leads with an equity-minded approach, partnering with Student Services and Enrollment Management (SSEM) and Student Life to create and sustain living-learning communities that broaden a student's vision of what it means to flourish in a liberal arts and research-extensive environment. This role is responsible for the implementation and oversight of assessment instruments that evaluate the efficacy of the residential experience in closing equity gaps for underrepresented groups. The AD effectively collaborates with all University Housing units-including Human Resources, Business Services, Facilities, Dining & Conferences-to optimize financial and human resources, ensuring that every operational decision aligns with the goal of creating an inclusive, state-of-the-art residential experience.
