What does an art designer do?

An Art Designer is responsible for creating visual concepts and designs for various media, such as advertisements, video games, films, websites, or print publications. They work closely with clients and creative teams to develop the overall look and feel of a project, ensuring that the visual elements communicate the intended message effectively. Art Designers use tools like Adobe Creative Suite to produce layouts, illustrations, and graphics, and they often oversee other artists or designers to bring a cohesive vision to life. Their role combines creativity with technical skills and project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an art designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Art Designer, you need a solid background in visual design principles, color theory, and composition, often supported by a degree in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is vital, and a strong portfolio is typically expected. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help Art Designers collaborate effectively and translate ideas into compelling visuals. These skills are crucial for producing high-quality, impactful designs that meet client or project goals.

  • Create and maintain accurate product files, mockups, production specifications, and supporting documentation
  • Review artwork for proper sizing, line weight, spacing, color separation, and production feasibility
  • Work directly with production teams to answer questions, resolve artwork issues, and make timely file adjustments

  • Collaborate with designers to adapt creative artwork for manufacturing without compromising the overall design
  • Set up new product information, SKUs, paint colors, file locations, and other production details
  • Proofread and verify artwork, product information, and production instructions before files are released
  • Maintain organized and accurate digital files throughout the production process
  • Help troubleshoot production challenges and recommend practical design solutions
  • Communicate changes clearly across the Design and Production teams
  • Manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment

Qualifications

  • Degree in Graphic Design, Production Design, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Illustrator; working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
  • Experience preparing vector artwork and production-ready files
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, color, file organization, and print-production standards
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
  • Comfortable working in both an office environment and an active production setting
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to receive feedback and make revisions efficiently
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects while meeting production deadlines
  • Experience with screen printing, etching, packaging, labels, prepress, or manufacturing is a plus
  • Experience working with CAD or 3D printing Files is a big plus!

What Success Looks Like
