THE POSITION

Start your future in the mechanical field as an Automotive Mechanic Intern with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). This internship helps you build real skills while working in a professional shop environment. You will gain confidence as you learn from trained technicians and support important fleet operations. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore a career in the automotive and mechanical field with the PSP Transportation Division!


DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This internship is designed to give you real learning experiences in a supportive and supervised setting. You will be encouraged to ask questions, take part in hands-on tasks, and work with experienced staff. These activities will help you build a stronger understanding of automotive technology and how fleet operations work. As an Automotive Mechanic Intern, you will perform the following duties:

  • Maintenance Support: Assist with routine service tasks and basic vehicle care
  • Vehicle Inspection: Perform checks that help ensure safe and ready fleet vehicles
  • Diagnostic Assistance: Observe troubleshooting steps and use testing tools under supervision
  • Shop Safety: Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas that meet shop expectations
  • Team Learning: Work with experienced technicians and take part in guided repair activities


Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Internship, Fall 2026
  • Free parking
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work schedule listed are the standard hours of operation, however the program area will work with school schedule.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • You must possess a high school diploma or GED and currently be enrolled in an Automotive Technology or Automotive Mechanic program at a trade school or college.


Additional Requirements:

  • You must possess a valid driver's license.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • You must have no adult criminal conviction graded Misdemeanor 2 or higher under PA Title 18 (or its equivalent for out-of-state and federal convictions).
  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
