What does an Army optometrist do?

An Army Optometrist is a healthcare professional who provides vision care to soldiers and their families. Their responsibilities include performing eye exams, diagnosing vision problems, prescribing corrective lenses, and detecting eye diseases or injuries. They may also be involved in preventive care, vision readiness programs, and advising commanders on eye protection and vision standards for troops. Army Optometrists work in military hospitals, clinics, or field environments, ensuring that service members maintain optimal eye health for operational readiness.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Army optometrist?

To thrive as an Army Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, a state optometry license, and completion of military officer training. Familiarity with military electronic health record systems, diagnostic equipment, and vision testing tools is essential. Strong decision-making, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for working with service members and multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure accurate vision care, enhance mission readiness, and promote the health and safety of military personnel.

What are some unique challenges faced by Army optometrists compared to civilian optometrists?

Army optometrists often work in diverse environments, including remote or deployed settings, where resources and equipment may be limited. Job description

Contract Optometrist North Carolina Army National Guard

DT-Trak is recruiting a licensed optometrist to support the North Carolina Army National Guard's Medical Readiness program. This part-time, weekend-based assignment provides vision exams for military flight physicals and periodic health assessments during Inactive Duty Training (IDT) and special mobilization/readiness events. A steady, recurring schedule with a multi-year contract term makes this an excellent fit for an optometrist seeking flexible, well-compensated part-time work.

Assignment Details

  • Duty locations: Medical Readiness Detachment (MRD), Simmons Army Airfield, Fayetteville, NC (Cumberland County), and 449th CAB Headquarters, Morrisville, NC (Wake County); occasional special-event travel to other NC sites
  • Schedule: core hours 0800โ€“1700, typically Saturday/Sunday during scheduled IDT periods; extended 0600โ€“2000 hours during Periodic Health Assessments (PHA), Soldier Readiness Processing (SRP), and mobilization events
  • Approx. 16 hours/month (~192 hours/year) base workload, consistent across the full contract term
  • Contract term: Base Year plus four 1-year option periods, plus a possible 6-month extension under FAR 52.217-8 (up to ~5.5 years total potential duration)
  • In-person clinical work โ€” all eye exams require direct patient contact and specialized equipment; telework is not available for exam duties
  • Travel to duty locations is reimbursed separately as an actual-cost line item under the contract โ€” it is not built into the hourly rate

Compensation

  • Hourly Rate (taxable; market-based โ€” role is not covered by the applicable SCA Wage Determinations): $100.00/hour
  • Travel to Fayetteville/Morrisville duty locations: Reimbursed separately

Requirements

  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited school or college of optometry
  • Current, valid, unrestricted license to practice optometry in the State of North Carolina
  • Ability to obtain and maintain installation/PIV access; favorable FBI fingerprint check required before work may begin
  • Ability to complete required Army Training Certification Tracking System (ATCTS) training and annual refreshers
  • Availability for recurring weekend (Saturday/Sunday) IDT periods, with periodic extended-hours availability for PHA/SRP/mobilization events
  • Prior military, National Guard, or aviation/flight-physical exam experience preferred but not required

About the Assignment

This assignment supports the North Carolina Army National Guard's Medical Readiness Detachment, providing vision screenings and eye exams required for military flight physicals and force readiness events. The role offers a predictable, recurring weekend schedule and a multi-year contract horizon, awarded under a FAR Part 8.4 streamlined trade-off procurement that favors offerors with competitive compensation packages and strong workforce retention practices.
