The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) will administer medications with safety techniques and sound judgment under the supervision of a licensed nurse. The person holding this position is delegated the responsibility for carrying out the assigned duties and responsibilities in accordance with current existing federal and state regulations and established company policies and procedures.

JOB DUTIES:

MA-Cs will administer the following medications

  • Oral medications, including scheduled medications
  • Inhalers
  • Nebulizer treatments, only if nurse completes lung assessment before and after and documents findings
  • Topical and rectal ointments
  • Nasal sprays and drops
  • Eye ointments and drops
  • Ear ointments and drops
  • Non-invasive treatments
  1. Observes residents for drug reactions and reports any concerns to the nurse immediately
  2. Monitors residents vital signs
  3. Calculates medication dosages and stocks the medication cart
  4. Documents what medications were given for the day on the medication administrator record (MAR) chart
  5. Reports to the nurse on duty general and specific information pertaining to the response of the residents to their medications or treatments and any other pertinent or appropriate information
  6. Reports to the nurse on duty for instructions before administering any PRN medication
  7. Audits documentation to assure accurate, complete, and timely recording of medications and treatments
  8. Safely lifts, moves, and transfers residents as required
  9. Attends all mandatory meetings and in-services
  10. Participates in a med pass audit at any time
  11. Other duties as assigned by Director of Nursing or Nurse on duty

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS& ABILITIES:

  1. Adheres to and interprets resident rights and personnel policies
  2. Knowledge of federal and state regulations
  3. Understands special needs and limitations of elderly
  4. Recognizes and identifies problems and refer to others if necessary
  5. Ability to communicate with the resident, family, staff, and community
  6. Maintains the confidentiality of resident information and honor his/her personal and property rights
  7. Responds to the needs of the facility, residents, and families in a timely and appropriate manner
  8. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents
  9. Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level in which they are currently functioning
  10. Addresses resident and family satisfaction issues immediately by reporting them to the Supervisor in a professional manner
  11. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  12. Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and/or holidays

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Must have high school diploma or equivalent. Must have current, Arkansas state license and must be able to provide all necessary documentation.
