What is an architectural designer?

An architectural designer uses technology to create diagrams and plans for the creation of buildings and structures. Architectural design involves engineering, design, and architectural components to develop plans that are accurate. Builders and construction workers use those plans to erect buildings and other structures. Your responsibilities include drafting drawings and schematics for clients. Your duties also include researching laws and building codes so that your designs are safe and legal. You are responsible for performing calculations, collecting data, and making sure that the final product follows the client’s design preferences.

What is an architectural designer?

An architectural designer is a professional who plans and designs buildings and other structures. They create detailed drawings, plans, and models, often working under the supervision of a licensed architect. Architectural designers focus on both the aesthetics and functionality of a project, ensuring that designs meet client needs, building codes, and sustainability standards. They commonly use computer-aided design (CAD) software and collaborate with other professionals such as engineers and contractors throughout the design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an architectural designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Architectural Designer, you need proficiency in architectural design principles, spatial planning, and a relevant degree in architecture or a related field. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and knowledge of building codes or LEED certification is commonly required. Strong creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These skills ensure the creation of functional, aesthetic, and compliant structures that meet client and regulatory expectations.

How does an architectural designer typically collaborate with other professionals during a project?

Architectural Designers work closely with a range of professionals, including architects, engineers, contractors, and interior designers, to bring building concepts to life. Collaboration often involves participating in design meetings, coordinating drawings and specifications, and addressing technical or aesthetic concerns raised by team members. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Architectural Designers must incorporate feedback and ensure designs comply with both client requirements and regulatory standards. This collaborative approach helps streamline the design process and ensures project goals are met efficiently.

Job description

STRUCK is searching for a Utah based Architectural Designer who brings creative vision and technical precision together to support the design and execution of branded spaces, immersive environments, and architectural experiences.

We Need...
  • The Architectural Designer will work closely with our Chief Creative Officer, Design Architect, and other creative and production team members. You’ll contribute to early concept development, mood boards, and storytelling—while also producing accurate drawings, 3D models, and documentation through each project phase. This role is ideal for a designer who’s passionate about the intersection of narrative and form, and eager to grow in both aesthetic exploration and architectural detailing.

  • Must be located in Utah.
  • 3-7 years of professional experience in architecture, experiential design, or a related field.
  • Masters or equivalent professional degree in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or a related discipline.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating both conceptual design thinking and technical drafting/modeling skills.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, SketchUp, Bluebeam and Adobe Creative Suite; familiarity with Enscape, Lumion, or similar rendering tools.
  • Understanding of basic building systems, codes, and construction terminology.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with an eagerness to learn from both creative and technical team members.
You Will...
  • Develop sketches, mood boards, diagrams, and narratives to shape project vision.
  • Collaborate with architects and creative leadership to align inspiration with feasibility.
  • Translate abstract ideas into spatial concepts and immersive branded experiences.
  • Create drawings, 3D models, renderings, and visual assets across all project phases.
  • Integrate consultant input and ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance in documentation.
  • Support presentations, client deliverables, and design reviews.
  • Conduct research on materials, trends, and building systems.
  • Participate in site visits, RFIs, and mockups to maintain design intent.
