Position Description

Career opportunity for well-trained Hair Stylist to provide salon services for senior adults. Position includes a competitive salary plus excellent benefits to include health, dental, vision insurance. There are no space rental fees, no utility sharing all covered by Arbor Acres (see list below). The Hair Stylist will work in beautiful surroundings with lovely clientele. Weekdays only--no weekends! Must have 2-4 years as a hair care professional preferably with Seniors.

Hair Stylist Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Develops and implements appointment schedules within each salon.
  2. Enters daily resident charges for services.
  3. Assesses supplies and working tool needs including brushes, combs, rollers, blow dryers, etc. and chemicals and solutions (i.e. shampoo, conditioners, permanent solutions, hair color, etc.).
  4. Performs beauty and barber services, including but not limited to shampoos, sets, scalp care, perms, manicures, pedicures, etc., as permitted by the regulations of the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Arts.
  5. Assists with the transportation of residents to and from the salon, as conditions permit.
  6. Assists residents with beauty and barber needs for special events when notified by staff or family (i.e., comb-out hair, nails, etc.).
  7. Assists with cleaning of salon, maintenance and sterilization of tools and equipment, and proper storage of soiled linen and trash.
  8. Communicates to nursing staff or the Director of Continuing Care of any unusual observations, incidents, or changes in a resident.
  9. Attends staff in-service training sessions and department meetings.
  10. Assists with the transfer of residents safely into and out of salon chairs, including wheelchairs and Geri-chairs.
  11. Performs any other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on an as-needed basis.
  1. Thorough knowledge of beauty and barber procedures, chemicals, and solutions.
  2. Must be able to stand for 6-8 hours per day.
  3. Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, and raise arms in any direction in carrying out hair and nail care duties.
  4. Must be able to push 200 lbs. and lift supplies weighing up to 30 lbs.
  5. Solid understanding of the special needs and limitations of older adults and the disabled elderly.
  6. Knowledge of basic mathematical computations as necessary to maintain daily record.
  7. Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills.
  8. Ability to perform mental functions and withstand moderate amounts of stress.
  9. Work habits include regular attendance, teamwork, initiative, willingness to learn, dependability, promptness, and punctuality.
  10. Good eye/hand coordination required to perform hair cutting/styling and hair/nail care, and must be able to identify and distinguish colors and textures.
  11. Ability to exercise good judgment and patience when dealing with residents, residents' families, volunteers, and staff. Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of a 24-hour daily operation.
  12. Regularly exposed to toxic agents, strong odors, and extreme heat.

Minimum Experience

  1. 2-4 years as a hair care professional, preferably with the elderly.

License and/or Certification Required

  1. Licensed by the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art.
