Position Summary:

District Language Interpreters provide accurate and impartial interpretation and translation services to ensure meaningful language access between multilingual students, families, and school staff across the district, from early childhood through our adult education program. In addition, interpreters serve as cultural liaisons, helping staff and families bridge cultural differences, navigate school systems, and foster an inclusive environment where all families feel welcome and supported.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpretation in various educational settings, including classrooms, parent teacher conferences, Special Education meetings (IEPs), registration, disciplinary meetings, home visits (with another RPS staff present for the entirety of the home visit),family engagement activities, and districtwide events and requests.
  • Fulfill interpretation requests for all grade levels for students, families, and staff.
  • Translate and/or revise school and district correspondence and materials into the target language.
  • Serve as a cultural and linguistic resource to staff and families, helping build trust, connections, and understanding.
  • Interpreters are expected to flex their work schedule when there are pre-arranged appointments, including but not limited to, parent-teacher conferences, IEP meetings, districtwide events, and occasional after-hours requests as part of the contracted workday.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, students, teachers, administration, and community members.
  • Encourage parent involvement by recruiting and doing outreach for school and district meetings, events, and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's degree Preferred - Interpreting, Education, Linguistics or related field.
  • Advanced/Superior Level of Language Proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • 40 hour Interpreter Training
  • Ability to interpret accurately and impartially in educational settings (i.e. classrooms, IEP meetings, conferences, registration).
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards of a Professional Interpreter
  • Computer skills preferred.
  • Flexibility and the ability to work as a cooperative team member.
  • Positive rapport with children including the ability to correct inappropriate student behavior with fairness and consistency.
  • Regular, on-time attendance is required.
