Job description

Compensation: $24.67- $27.00 Hourly

GENERAL PURPOSE: Under the direction of the Aquaplex Manager, the Aquaplex Senior Lifeguard will assist the Aquaplex Manager with the coordination and facilitation of daily operations. The Aquaplex Senior Lifeguard is responsible for assisting with daily facility and program operations at the Aztec Aquaplex during afternoon, evening, and/or weekend hours. This position will focus on the safety of daily operations, staff supervision, and facility events. The Aquaplex Senior Lifeguard is responsible for upholding the Aztec Recreation mission and values of Wellness, Integrity, Safety, Service, Professionalism, Excellence, Respect, & Substantiality.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions
  • Assist in managing daily operations of the Aztec Aquaplex to ensure compliance with all Aztec Recreation, facility, and university policies and ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all members, affiliates and guests
  • Perform lifeguard duties; prevent accidents; enforce rules/regulations and monitors daily facility usage; responds to first aid emergencies and administers basic first aid and/or CPR as necessary.
  • Removes and replaces pool covers, tests the temperature, chlorine, and pH values of the pool water, and performs routine pool area maintenance as required
  • Responsible for assisting with the daily supervision of staff and building operations; ensure functioning of all equipment & chemicals, staff supervision is maintained, and coverage is appropriate.
  • Assist with supervision of Aquaplex programming and/or events (intramurals, sport clubs, aquatic programs, rentals, etc.)
  • Supervise Lifeguard Staff, in the absence of the Aquatic Manager, to ensure all facility policies are being enforced and observed by staff
  • Help coach, train, and instruct new and less experienced lifeguards in proper work methods, tools, equipment and safety precautions; provide technical assistance to staff.
  • Assist with regular staff meetings and/or trainings
  • Knowledgeable of departmental and facility procedures and emergency policies; stay current on issues/changes in operations
  • Maintain strong communication with Aztec Recreation Career staff
  • Position inclusive of Aquaplex Member Services Representatives, Aquaplex Lifeguard, and Aquaplex Lead position responsibilities
  • Assists others in department with special tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in Recreation, Recreational Administration, Physical Education, Sports Administration, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred

Experience:
  • Two years supervisory experience in a recreation or related field preferred
  • Experience with aquatic recreational facility management, customer service, aquatic programming, and lifeguarding
  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of customer service
  • Experience with Fusion software and When to Work scheduling program preferred

License & Certification:
  • Possess current certifications in American Red Cross CPR/AED for the professional rescuer & American Red Cross Lifeguard Training. (or ability to obtain prior to position start date)
  • Possess current certification in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. (or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire)
  • Possess current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor. (or ability to obtain within 120 days of hire)

SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a full-time position. Employee schedules vary according to business needs. Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays based on program demands.

General office and outdoor environment. Work varies in nature, but may require sitting, standing, walking, and moving around aquatics facility. The working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.
While working outdoors, the work environment may involve exposure to various elements including but not limited to: sun, heat/cold, wind, rain, weather, dust, pollen and other environmental risks.

This position requires the individual to spend time sitting and using office equipment and computers. This person will also spend time lifting and moving aquatic equipment based on scheduled programs and activities. This position may be required to supervise aquatic programs and spend additional time on pool deck. Must be able to lift 45 lbs unassisted and move pool related heavy equipment.

Inside the Organization:
  • Reports to the Aquaplex Manager
  • Assists with supervising Aquaplex Member Services Representatives, Aquaplex Lifeguards, Aquaplex Instructors, Tennis Supervisors, Tennis Instructors, and Aquaplex Leads
  • Further interactions may include other full-time and part-time staff within Aztec Recreation

EMPLOYMENT CATEGORY: Full-Time; Hourly; Non-Exempt; Supervisor, Grade 4
