Job Description

This professional will help lead high-impact traffic and transportation projects that shape how people move through Chicago, surrounding communities and across the nationimproving safety, mobility, and quality of life. From conceptual planning through final design and construction, theyll drive complex, multi-phase roadway and traffic engineering initiatives for major public agencies and stakeholders. Core Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Coordination

  • Report to the Chief of Traffic Engineering Services

  • Direct and coordinate multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, technicians, and consultants

  • Mentor junior staff and foster a collaborative work environment

  • Assign tasks and monitor progress to ensure milestones are met on schedule and budgets are monitored and managed

Strategic Planning & Oversight

  • Develop and manage comprehensive project plans, including timelines, budgets, and resource allocation

  • Ensure all roadway design and construction activities align with jurisdictional standards

  • Oversee multiple phases of traffic projectsincluding conceptual planning, preliminary/final design and construction

  • Assist with proposal writing and strategic project pursuit planning

  • Assist with business development and client relationship building

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, government agencies, and community stakeholders

  • Lead presentations, public hearings, and meetings to communicate project goals and updates

Youll thrive here if you have

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering or similar required

  • A minimum of 15 years of professional experience, a minimum of 10 years of traffic engineering experience, and 5+ years of project management and client interface experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License (Required), Illinois PE

  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) Certification preferred or the ability to acquire within 6 months

  • Strong oral and technical writing skills

  • Familiarity with MicroStation (preferably ORD experience), Synchro, HCS, SIDRA, VISSIM, ProjectWise and BlueBeam

  • A strong competency with IDOT, Illinois Tollway, regional counties and/or CDOT Phase I/II project processing with specific emphasis on roadway and traffic engineering and operations projects

  • A strong familiarity with the MUTCD, Illinois Supplement of the MUTCD, Illinois Vehicle Code and other relevant state and national traffic engineering and traffic law publications

  • The ability to travel 20% of the time

  • Current membership with committee/board involvement in related professional organizations such as ITE, ACEC, ACEC, APWA, NCUTCD, etc. are a plus.

  • Compensation: $165,000 - $240,000 annual salary
    The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the states law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
