CARPENTER APPRENTICE / LABORER

THE OPPORTUNITY

Sun Construction is currently seeking a passionate individual to join our team as a Carpenter Apprentice / Laborer, offering a gateway to an exciting construction career. Working directly under the expert guidance of a seasoned Carpenter, you'll play a vital role in constructing, erecting, installing, and repairing structures using wood, plywood, metal studs, and drywall, etc. This apprenticeship blends hands-on fieldwork with structured class time, providing a unique opportunity to apply practical skills in real-world construction scenarios while deepening your theoretical knowledge. This is typically a four-year program and commitment where after all the requirements are met and successfully completed, you will earn the title as Journeyman Carpenter.


Initially the work will start out as labor tasks and gradually move to apprentice related work. Since the classes for this program start every 4 years, we will need the current program to complete before the new classes begin. This will give us the opportunity to ensure our next group of apprentices are displaying the required aptitude, commitment and good character for carpentry apprenticeship.

COMPENSATION

The starting pay for private work is $16/hour and the current starting Apprentice wage for federal work is $20.50/hour. Fringe benefits would be in addition to the starting wage. More details will be discussed upon hiring.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Over the course of the program, you will learn or be introduced to the following:

  • Form and prepare foundations, sidewalks, driveways, retaining walls, curbs, and various types of concrete formworks ready for placement. Assistance with concrete placement and finishing is a plus.
  • Rough carpentry layout, plate, detail & construct walls; layout, cut and install post & beams; layout and construct floors systems; layout, cut and assemble roof frames; install various types of Simpson and custom heavy gauge hardware; install trusses, block, fascia and sheath roofs; ceiling framing; frame soffits and install finish soffit materials; installation of window frames; install various types of siding and trim materials; cut and assemble stairs & railings; installation of drywall; experience with various types of roofing.
  • Finish carpentry including doors, frames, hardware, casing, base board, assemble and install cabinets, counter-tops, wainscot, crown molding in both residential and commercial settings.
  • Sand surfaces to remove ridges, tool marks, glue, or caulking.
  • Use of builder's levels, transits and other types of layout tools for insuring structures are built level, plumb and square and in the correct locations, at the correct elevations, and within required setbacks.
  • Safe use of ladders, properly erecting scaffolding, proper use of PPE including fall restraint and fall protection systems in compliance with OSHA standards and company policies.
  • Taking off materials, creating cut packages, material selection to ensure quality finish products.
  • Coordinating and communication with team members to ensure work is done safely and efficiently.
  • Select tools, equipment, and materials, transporting them to the work site as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety by cleaning work areas including ensuring sites are free of nails and other miscellaneous debris
  • Take care of company tools, machines, vehicles, and equipment if ever they are needed to perform work tasks and ensure they are left in good working condition and cleaned properly after use. Must also follow company protocols for signing in and signing out.
  • Report on all issues and incidents to your direct supervisor or HR manager.


Also functions of a laborer as needed include keeping the job site tidy and safe, moving of materials, and manual labor tasks as needed.



QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated eagerness and willingness to learn.
  • Working knowledge of job site safety and OSHA standards, complemented by the ability to complete a company-specific safety orientation.

  • Upholds a high standard of integrity and professionalism.
  • Strong or developing communication skills.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
