Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler information

What is an apprentice structural BIM modeler?

Apprentice Structural BIM Modelers are entry-level professionals who assist in creating and managing Building Information Models (BIM) for structural engineering projects. They work under the supervision of experienced modelers or engineers to produce accurate digital representations of buildings and structures. Their tasks often include drafting structural components, updating models based on design changes, and coordinating with other disciplines. This role is ideal for individuals starting their careers in BIM and structural design, offering hands-on training and experience with industry-standard software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice structural BIM modeler?

To thrive as an Apprentice Structural BIM Modeler, you need a solid understanding of construction principles, basic structural engineering concepts, and a relevant qualification such as a diploma or associate degree in drafting, civil engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD is typically required, along with any relevant BIM certifications. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with engineers, architects, and project teams. These skills are crucial for producing accurate models, ensuring project coordination, and supporting efficient construction workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by apprentice structural BIM modelers when transitioning from traditional drafting to BIM modeling?

One common challenge for Apprentice Structural BIM Modelers is adapting to the collaborative and data-driven nature of BIM workflows compared to traditional drafting. You’ll need to learn new software, such as Autodesk Revit, and understand how to coordinate your models with architects, engineers, and other stakeholders. Navigating model accuracy, managing large datasets, and keeping up with evolving industry standards can also be demanding. However, most teams provide mentorship and structured training to help apprentices build these essential skills.

What is the difference between Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler vs Junior Structural Engineer?

AspectApprentice Structural Bim ModelerJunior Structural Engineer

Job description

We are seeking an experienced BIM Modeler / Electrical Detailer to support the planning, coordination, and execution of commercial electrical construction projects. This role is responsible for creating accurate BIM models, coordination drawings, and installation documentation that improve constructability, streamline prefabrication, and support efficient field installation.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience modeling commercial electrical systems and is highly proficient with Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks. You will collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, Superintendents, and other trades to coordinate designs, resolve clashes, and develop construction-ready models throughout every phase of a project.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain detailed BIM models for commercial electrical construction projects.
  • Produce electrical shop drawings, installation layouts, coordination drawings, and prefabrication packages.
  • Model conduit systems, electrical equipment, cable tray, supports, sleeves, and other electrical components.
  • Perform clash detection and coordinate electrical systems with mechanical, plumbing, structural, fire protection, and architectural trades.
  • Review construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents to ensure model accuracy and constructability.
  • Participate in BIM/VDC coordination meetings and incorporate RFIs, design revisions, and field updates into project models.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers, Estimators, Engineers, field supervisors, and other project stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Generate accurate, field-ready drawings that support installation, fabrication, and prefabrication activities.
  • Maintain project models throughout construction and assist with as-built documentation upon project completion.
  • Ensure BIM deliverables comply with company standards, project specifications, and quality expectations.
  • Identify modeling conflicts early and recommend practical solutions to improve coordination and installation efficiency.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience as a BIM Modeler, Electrical Detailer, VDC Designer, or similar role.
  • Commercial electrical construction experience is required.
  • Proven experience modeling commercial electrical systems for construction projects.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks.
  • Strong understanding of commercial electrical systems, conduit routing, equipment layouts, and installation practices.
  • Experience with BIM coordination, clash detection, multidisciplinary collaboration, and constructability reviews.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate, high-quality construction drawings.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent experience in BIM, drafting, electrical design, or a related field is preferred.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid time off and company holidays.
  • Career advancement and professional development opportunities.
  • Stable pipeline of commercial electrical construction projects.
  • Opportunity to work with advanced BIM and VDC technology on complex commercial projects.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented work environment.
