Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler information

What is an apprentice structural BIM modeler?

Apprentice Structural BIM Modelers are entry-level professionals who assist in creating and managing Building Information Models (BIM) for structural engineering projects. They work under the supervision of experienced modelers or engineers to produce accurate digital representations of buildings and structures. Their tasks often include drafting structural components, updating models based on design changes, and coordinating with other disciplines. This role is ideal for individuals starting their careers in BIM and structural design, offering hands-on training and experience with industry-standard software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an apprentice structural BIM modeler?

To thrive as an Apprentice Structural BIM Modeler, you need a solid understanding of construction principles, basic structural engineering concepts, and a relevant qualification such as a diploma or associate degree in drafting, civil engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software like Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, and AutoCAD is typically required, along with any relevant BIM certifications. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with engineers, architects, and project teams. These skills are crucial for producing accurate models, ensuring project coordination, and supporting efficient construction workflows.

What are some common challenges faced by apprentice structural BIM modelers when transitioning from traditional drafting to BIM modeling?

One common challenge for Apprentice Structural BIM Modelers is adapting to the collaborative and data-driven nature of BIM workflows compared to traditional drafting. You’ll need to learn new software, such as Autodesk Revit, and understand how to coordinate your models with architects, engineers, and other stakeholders. Navigating model accuracy, managing large datasets, and keeping up with evolving industry standards can also be demanding. However, most teams provide mentorship and structured training to help apprentices build these essential skills.

What is the difference between Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler vs Junior Structural Engineer?

AspectApprentice Structural Bim ModelerJunior Structural Engineer
CredentialsBasic technical training, ongoing BIM coursesBachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
Work EnvironmentDesign teams, BIM software labsDesign offices, project sites
ResponsibilitiesAssist in creating BIM models, learn software toolsDesign calculations, project planning
Industry UsageCommon in architecture and construction firmsEngineering consulting firms, construction companies

The Apprentice Structural Bim Modeler typically focuses on learning BIM software and assisting in model creation under supervision, while the Junior Structural Engineer handles more complex design tasks and calculations. Both roles are essential in the structural design process but differ in experience level and responsibilities.

Job description

BIM Manager/ Design Technology Lead

We are seeking an experienced BIM Manager to lead digital delivery across complex infrastructure and design projects. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in both Autodesk Revit and Bentley platforms, enabling seamless coordination across multi‑discipline teams on rail, transit, aviation, and vertical construction projects. You will drive BIM standards, mentor project teams, and integrate emerging technologies to elevate project execution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and maintain BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) aligned with project‑specific requirements and client mandates
  • Manage and enforce BIM standards across Revit and Bentley environments (OpenBuildings, OpenRoads, OpenBridge, MicroStation)
  • Lead coordination efforts using Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC), BIM 360, Navisworks, and ProjectWise
  • Oversee federated model assembly, clash detection workflows, and issue resolution across all project disciplines
  • Establish and maintain Common Data Environments (CDE) for data governance and file management
  • Collaborate with project managers, design leads, and construction teams to ensure BIM deliverables meet contract requirements
  • Drive adoption of AI‑assisted workflows, computational design, and digital twin strategies
  • Mentor and train junior BIM technicians and project staff; conduct BIM audits and quality reviews
  • Prepare and present BIM methodology documentation for clients, owner agencies, and regulatory stakeholders
  • Support business development by contributing to technical proposals and RFP responses
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field
  • 7+ years of BIM experience on infrastructure or large‑scale AEC projects
  • Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Revit (MEP, Structural, Architectural) and Bentley suite (MicroStation, OpenBuildings, OpenRoads)
  • Hands‑on experience with ACC/BIM 360, Navisworks Manage, and ProjectWise
  • Demonstrated ability to author and enforce LOD/LOI standards and BIM Execution Plans
  • Strong knowledge of ISO 19650, COBie, IFC, and open BIM principles
  • Experience managing clash detection and model coordination on multi‑discipline projects
  • Exceptional communication skills; ability to present BIM strategies to technical and non‑technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience on rail, transit, or aviation infrastructure projects (e.g., MTA, Port Authority, PANYNJ)
  • Familiarity with Bentley's iTwin platform and digital twin workflows
  • Background in AI/ML integration into BIM or AEC workflows
  • Experience in multi‑prime or joint‑venture project delivery environments
  • Proficiency with Dynamo, Grasshopper, or parametric design scripting
