Job description

Emerald Transportation Solutions is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Reefer Technician to support the installation, diagnostics, maintenance, and repair of refrigerated transport units used in commercial fleet vehicles. This role is critical to ensuring optimal temperature control performance, regulatory compliance, and overall equipment reliability for our customers in food distribution, pharmaceuticals, and temperature-sensitive logistics. with chassis, electrical, production, and service teams to ensure that every refrigerated unit leaving our facility meets Emerald’s high standards for safety, quality, and performance.

Key Responsibilities
Installation amp; Assembly
  • Install refrigerated (reefer) units on truck bodies and trailers in accordance with manufacturer specifications and internal engineering standards.
  • Integrate electrical systems, harnesses, control panels, temperature sensors, and telematics systems.
  • Fabricate and route wiring and refrigerant lines while ensuring proper insulation, sealing, and structural integrity.
  • Perform startup procedures and commissioning of new installations.
Diagnostics amp; Repair
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration system failures using diagnostic software, gauges, multimeters, and manufacturer-specific tools.
  • Repair or replace compressors, evaporators, condensers, control modules, thermostats, and related components.
  • Troubleshoot engine-driven and electric standby systems.
  • Identify root causes of recurring failures and recommend corrective actions.
Preventative Maintenance
  • Conduct scheduled PM services, including refrigerant level checks, leak detection, belt inspections, electrical testing, and filter replacements.
  • Inspect units for wear, corrosion, and compliance with DOT and EPA standards.
  • Document preventative maintenance procedures thoroughly to ensure audit readiness.
Regulatory amp; Safety Compliance
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations, including proper refrigerant recovery and handling procedures.
  • Ensure EPA Section 608 certification standards are upheld.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures and shop safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace aligned with 5S and safety initiatives.
Documentation amp; Quality Control
  • Complete detailed service reports, installation checklists, and warranty documentation.
  • Utilize ERP and work order systems to track labor, parts usage, and job status.
  • Participate in quality audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support warranty claims analysis and corrective action processes.
Collaboration amp; Operational Support
  • Coordinate with Production, Chassis, and Electrical teams to minimize downtime and production delays.
  • Provide technical insight to Sales and Service regarding equipment specifications and performance capabilities.
  • Assist in training junior technicians or apprentices.
  • Support after-hours or emergency repair situations as needed.

Qualifications amp; Experience
Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical certification in Refrigeration, HVAC, Diesel Technology, or a related field preferred.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification strongly preferred (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with refrigeration, reefer, HVAC, or diesel systems.
  • Experience with major reefer brands (e.g., Thermo King, Carrier, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience in truck body manufacturing or fleet maintenance environment is a plus.
Technical Competencies
  • Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, pressure systems, and temperature control theory.
  • Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, and service manuals.
  • Proficient in using diagnostic software and electrical testing equipment.
  • Working knowledge of diesel engines and auxiliary power systems.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and maneuver 50+ lbs. regularly.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and at varying heights.
  • Ability to work in both indoor shop environments and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Capable of prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and repetitive motion tasks.
