Job description

A Lead Electrician uses their knowledge of custom automation, electricity and electrical components to support the effort in the build process of custom automated assembly systems. They will be responsible for coordinating the installation & troubleshooting of all electrical components during the system build process. These machines are uniquely designed assembly, inspection and test systems for industries that demand precision assembly for their components. Some of these industries include automotive, aerospace & medical equipment.
Lead Electrical Assembly Technician Job Duties
  • The lead electrical machine builder will be responsible for leading and coordinating the efforts in the electrical assembly build process which is a part of a computer controlled mechanical system
  • A lead electrician must possess the skills to work well with others and coordinate a team of electrical technicians and apprentices to support the effort of the build process
  • Read and understand complex assembly drawings, schematics, and test procedures
  • Panel wiring, machine wiring, debug and installation
  • Before beginning assembly, the electrician must be able to interpret the parts design from schematics to correctly determine if the proper material has been selected by the engineer.
    • Communication with the engineers may be required to make any necessary changes.
  • Must be able to layout dimensions of component locations on their own to drill and tap holes on the electrical panels, enclosures and machines for the assembly process.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Use tools such as conduit benders, screwdrivers, pliers, knives, hacksaws, and wire strippers.
  • Solid understanding of AC and DC electricity
  • Possess the ability to solder to the component level
  • Ability to read and operate various measuring equipment related to electronics such as a digital multi-meter
  • Possess a general knowledge of the use and operation of basic hand and power tools.
  • Experience with building and troubleshooting wiring harnesses.
  • Aligns electrical panels and components for assembly, manually or with or with a hoist.
  • Bolts, screws, dowels, welds or rivets parts together using hand tools, rivet gun and welding equipment or coordinates with a welder or mechanical technician to complete this work.
  • Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications.

Lead Electrical Assembly Technician Skills and Qualifications:
  • Good working knowledge of basic math must be used in the shop environment.
  • Solid background in blue print reading, electrical schematics, machine assembly, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
  • A lead electrical assembly technician must be able to evaluate product quality and make key decisions which are required to produce a quality product.
  • A lead electrician must be able to work well with other disciplines as well as other electricians and apprentices

Desired Computer Skills
  • Windows based operating systems

Other Skills Required
  • Must be able to be a part of a self-directed work force requiring minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of NEMA electrical standards, machine controls, sensors and safety devices.

  • This job will require some overnight travel to support the efforts of the build team and machine installs from time to time

Requirements:
  • High School Degree
  • 5 years of experience as an electrician in the industrial capital equipment industry and/or special machine builder industry.
  • DOL Journeymen Certificate desirable.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory duties. However, as a Lead, the position will require mentorship and guidance to less advanced team members.
Work Environment
This job operates in an active mechanical assembly shop environment. Safe work practices are required at all times in accordance with OHSA regulation.
