Position Overview
TDS seeks a motivated and organized professional to join our Data Center Solutions team. This is an ideal opportunity for someone with 1 to 3 years of data center technician experience. Candidates must have some data center support experience including hands-on cabling infrastructure and data center equipment installation experience. This opportunity is in the Stamford, CT area.
Candidates must be familiar with patching schedules, relevant project documentation and typical hardware install, move, add, change (IMAC) events that take place in a data center.
Responsibilities
  • Work under the direction of Data Center Operations Manager, to provide on-site support to maintain a data center and its hardware including day-to-day moves and other IMAC work:
  • Perform hands-on rack and stack of data center equipment and structured cabling installation
  • Cabling current and new setups including copper patching and fiber patching
  • Terminate cables in the data center, patch cords and cross-connects, as well as troubleshoot and repair cabling and infrastructure problems as needed
  • Install new hardware such as switches, servers, storage devices, firewalls and routers
  • Diagnose and repair server hardware (in conjunction with the IT Services Desk Team)
  • Help monitor the data center environment including power usage, rack capacity, network ports and climate
  • Pro-actively check the hardware alerts and single points of failure to ensure the date center is running optimally
  • Decommission old hardware: un-cable, remove from racks, and organize ecological disposal
  • Escort and assist 3rd party installers and adhere to established security policies
  • Manage hardware inventory and maintain a supply of spare equipment to ensure a rapid resolution for hardware repairs
  • Install and troubleshoot prefabricated fiber infrastructure
  • Update rack documentation and maintain accurate data center documentation including assisting with other team related administrative or operational tasks as needed
  • Interact and build an effective rapport with clients
  • Execute test procedures to ensure completeness of installations

Required Qualifications & Skills:
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant Data Center Operations, Data Center Technician or Data Center Hardware Support is required
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (both written and verbal), organizational, presentation and collaboration skills are essential
  • Knowledge of low-voltage cabling infrastructure standards including Category 6 cabling, Category 6A cabling, OM3 fiber, OM4 fiber and single-mode fiber
  • At least one year of hands-on server and network gear installation and move experience including performing network patching (copper and fiber cabling) within a data center
  • A good understanding data center operations and data center facilities
  • Basic understanding of all data center functions (production operations, network, server, storage, database, change control, disaster recovery/business recovery, help desk, systems management and facilities) is desired
  • Candidates must be familiar with patching schedules, relevant project documentation and typical hardware install, move, add, change (IMAC) events that take place in a data center.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel, is preferred
  • Strong time-management and follow-up skills are necessary
  • A dependable professional with a "role up your sleeves" attitude and a strong work ethic are required
