ABOUT THIS POSITION The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, one of the nation's largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix.
The
Wastewater Treatment Division of the Water Services Department is currently seeking an
Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Specialist. This position performs skilled technical work involving the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of electronic instruments and automatic process control equipment used throughout the City's water and wastewater treatment systems.
In this role, you will also evaluate the condition, performance, and reliability of critical electronic systems such as alarm and life-safety networks, building automation systems, and atmospheric and gas monitoring and alert systems. Responsibilities include conducting preventative maintenance, checking test instruments for accuracy, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
You will additionally provide instruction and on-the-job training related to instrumentation and equipment maintenance for peers, Operations and Maintenance staff, and I&C apprentice employees.
IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical knowledge and a commitment to safe, reliable operations. This includes:
Technical Knowledge- Safe electrical work practices.
- Electrical theory and system components, including temperature, pressure, level, and flow detection circuitry.
- Hydraulics and position-indication circuitry.
- Ability to read and interpret process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), electrical schematics, and mechanical diagrams.
- Familiarity with computer and peripheral equipment used in industrial environments, including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
Abilities and Work Requirements- Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work irregular hours, including shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
- Ability to participate in a stand-by/on-call rotation by the end of the probationary period.
SALARY Pay and Hiring Range: $35.08 to $47.01 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of analog and digital industrial control equipment, industrial electronics and test equipment or computer and peripheral equipment.
- An associate's degree in electronics may substitute for a maximum of one year of experience.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The minimum qualifications listed above, plus
- Completion of an accredited electronics program, technical school degree, or equivalent military training.
- Experience in:
- Automation, process/motor controls.
- Calibration or maintenance of electronic flow, level, or pressure equipment.
- Troubleshooting, inspecting, analyzing, and repairing electrical / electronic systems.
- Using a multimeter for checking AC/DC and analog (4 to 20 mAmp) signals.
- Use of technology/systems such as WAM, SAP, and Oracle to monitor workflows and manage assets.
- Reading, understanding, and interpreting blueprints and schematics.
