Job description

West Fraser offers a range of exciting career opportunities for individuals seeking challenging and rewarding careers. Sundre Woodlands is currently recruiting for a Woodlands GIS Technician.

Reporting to the Planning Superintendent, the Woodlands GIS Technician will work individually and with a team of professionals responsible for the maintenance and development of an integrated information system using ArcGIS (Desktop and Web GIS), ArcSDE, and an Oracle database. The position will include analysis for strategic and operational planning projects. This position will also work closely with our corporate technology and GIS group. The successful candidate will be required to work on location at the Sundre Woodlands office.

You'll do:

  • Maintenance & quality control of spatial data in The Land Resource Manager (LRM) for the Woods Department
  • Prepare & submit digital datasets to government agencies in accordance with required standards
  • Development and maintenance of map templates
  • Support Woods staff with LRM data management, mapping and analysis
  • Generate and distribute LRM reports for all forestry applications
  • Collaborate with other licensees and consultants to maintain consistent data exchange standards
  • Identify and implement workflow improvements
  • Provide support to other Alberta Woods teams, remotely

You have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems
  • Forestry education or forest industry experience
  • Self-motivated and team oriented, with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to staying current with emerging GIS technologies and continuously expanding technical expertise
  • Positive, solutionsfocused approach with a drive for high-quality results
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Remote sensing data processing abilities
  • Competency using ESRI tools including ArcGIS, Field Maps, Geodatabases, ArcSDE, Web GIS, and FME
  • Familiarity with data management systems such as the Land Resource Manager (LRM) would be an asset
  • Programming skills, in Python, SQL or other language
  • Strong analytic and data management skills
