Position Summary...What you'll do...Leads department sales growth through effective merchandising, pricing accuracy, inventory oversight, and seasonal execution. Leads community outreach efforts to promote optical services, expand brand presence, and strengthen local relationships. Represents the optical department in both community programs and internal business initiatives that support organizational goals. Sets and upholds high service standards to ensure prompt, accurate resolution of member inquiries and concerns. Leads eyewear and contact lens consultations, ensuring members receive clear guidance on product options and visual solutions under applicable optometric supervision. Oversees precise eyewear measurements, fittings, adjustments, and contact lens education, maintaining safety and accuracy under applicable optometric supervision. Ensures the confidentiality of member information and maintains accurate, compliant documentation, including HIPAA and safety protocols. Manages quality assurance processes, resolves complex optical issues under applicable optometric supervision, and maintains equipment calibration, cleanliness, and readiness. Leads, coaches, and develops the optical team through hiring, training, performance management, and recognition. Fosters a collaborative and inclusive culture grounded in accountability, engagement, and continuous development. Assigns duties strategically to optimize workflow, elevate skills, and ensure operational excellence. Supports certification and licensure pathways, encourages skill advancement, and ensures the timely renewal of credentials. Ensures apprentice opticians have sponsorship in accordance with state requirements and provides clear development pathways. Oversees the accuracy of all optical measurements, including pupillary distance, position of wear, and multifocal/progressive lens parameters under applicable optometric supervision. Ensures the consistent use of manual and digital tools. Ensures the high-quality execution of frame adjustments, repairs, and final eyewear inspections (including prism verification) under applicable optometric supervision. Leads troubleshooting efforts for non- adapt cases, under applicable optometric supervision, and coordinates communication with labs, suppliers, and optometrists regarding job status, product updates, and corrective actions. Directs eyewear and contact lens order processing, trial lens inventory control, and adherence to equipment calibration and maintenance protocols under applicable optometric supervision. Monitors equipment performance, guides troubleshooting, and coordinates repairs or replacements to maintain uninterrupted clinical operations. Supports OD services by overseeing appointment scheduling workflows, pre-testing procedures, contact lens insertion and removal documentation accuracy, and payment collection for doctor or telehealth services as applicable under contracted optometric services. Promotes the utilization of new and existing optical technologies to improve accuracy, efficiency, and member experience. Ensures compliance with HIPAA, optical regulations, company policies, and safety protocols, setting clear expectations for the team. Analyzes operational and performance reports, identifies gaps, and implements corrective actions to maintain audit-ready standards. Manages shrink prevention efforts, maintains appropriate stock levels, and enforces receiving procedures and inventory protection protocols. Oversees asset protection activities, quality assurance reviews, and the proper maintenance of optical equipment and work areas. Prepares, reviews, and uses operational reports to guide decision-making and ensure alignment with organizational goals. Represents the optical department in cross-functional collaborations supporting broader business objectives. Demonstrates up-to-date expertise and applies this to the development, execution, and improvement of action plans by providing expert advice and guidance to others'' in the application of information and best practices; supporting and aligning efforts to meet customer and business needs; and building commitment for perspectives and rationales. The hourly wage range for this position is $28.00 - $40.00* *The actual hourly rate will equal or exceed the required minimum wage applicable to the job location. Additional compensation in the form of premiums may be paid in amounts ranging from $0.35 per hour to $3.00 per hour in specific circumstances. Option 1: Completion of 2 or more years of college.
Option 2: 1 year's retail experience and 1 year's supervisory experience. Option 3: 2 years' general work experience, including 1 year's optical experience.
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent upon job entry or within 12 months of hire in order to sit for American Board of Opticianry (ABO) exam.
Meet the requirements to work as an Optical associate (for example, minimum age, qualification, registration, certification, and/or licensure when required by the optical organization and/or by State Boards of Opticianry, as applicable).
Must obtain ABO certification within 15 months.
In licensed/registration states, must obtain state-required optician licensure within 18 months of hire or initial movement into Sam's Optical, or within the timeframe required to complete state-mandated training hours plus an additional 3 months to obtain licensure, whichever is longer.
As required by state regulations, maintain NPI number and active state licensure.
