Job description

Fuel Cell R&D Laboratory Technologist — Solon, OH

Step into a hands-on lab role where you’ll help turn breakthrough clean-energy ideas into working fuel cell hardware. In a fast-moving R&D setting, you’ll partner with engineers and scientists to fabricate, assemble, test, and validate advanced fuel cell components and systems, moving innovations from the bench toward commercialization.

A day in the lab

You kick off by staging materials and tooling for the day’s builds, set up furnace cycles, and prep components for downstream testing. Midday, you’ll assemble and process parts, run system integrations and long-duration tests, log results meticulously, and communicate findings. You’ll close the loop by troubleshooting any anomalies, performing equipment care, and leaving a clean, safe workspace with a clear handoff to teammates.

What you’ll own
  • Hands-on fabrication, assembly, and processing of advanced fuel cell components.
  • Material preparation, assembly steps, thermal firing, processing, and post-processing activities.
  • Support for laboratory testing, system integration, validation, and extended-duration test campaigns.
  • Operation and routine maintenance of furnaces, test stands, lab equipment, tooling, and related process assets.
  • Execution of documented work instructions, quality procedures, and process controls while spotting improvement opportunities.
  • Preparation of materials, components, and assemblies for subsequent testing and production activities.
  • Accurate, complete recording of experimental data, observations, and process documentation.
  • Clear communication of status, issues, and handoffs with engineers and cross-functional teammates.
  • Assistance with troubleshooting equipment, processes, and experimental failures.
  • Upkeep of a safe, organized, and clean laboratory environment.
How you’ll grow

This role offers exposure to advanced manufacturing methods, materials processing, testing, and product development—ideal for someone who loves learning new technical processes and contributing across multiple lab areas while working on technology with the potential to transform the energy industry.

Traits that thrive here
  • Enjoys hands-on technical work and pragmatic problem solving.
  • Exceptionally organized and detail-focused.
  • Adaptable in a dynamic environment with evolving priorities.
  • Curious, quick to learn new equipment, processes, and technologies.
  • Reliable team player who communicates clearly and owns outcomes.
Minimum experience
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering Technology, or related technical field; or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Experience in a laboratory, manufacturing, pilot production, or technical environment.
  • Comfort following documented procedures while upholding high quality standards.
  • Strong attention to detail with rigorous documentation habits.
  • Ability to safely operate laboratory equipment and technical tools.
What you bring
  • Direct laboratory or manufacturing experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude and enthusiasm for learning new processes.
  • Skill in documenting work and communicating results.
  • Flexibility to support multiple technical areas.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Preferred qualifications
  • Background supporting R&D, prototype builds, or pilot manufacturing.
  • Experience with lab equipment, furnaces, or test systems.
  • Materials processing, manufacturing, or assembly experience.
  • Familiarity with engineering documentation, testing, or quality systems.
  • Experience in an early-stage or startup environment.
How we define success
  • Reliable Execution: Work is completed safely, accurately, on schedule, and with minimal rework.
  • Quality & Documentation: Materials, test articles, and results are thoroughly documented, traceable, and ready for downstream use.
  • Operational Excellence: Equipment is cared for proactively; issues are surfaced early; lab operations stay organized and efficient.
  • Team Collaboration: Communication and handoffs are seamless, supporting shifting project priorities.
  • Growth & Adaptability: You expand your technical range while supporting new processes, technologies, and product development efforts.
