We are seeking an experienced Crane & Rigging Working Supervisor to lead our team in delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality lifting services. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing field personnel, including job planning, team management, safety compliance, and coordination with other departments to ensure project success. The candidate may be required to operate cranes when not required as field supervision. This position reports directly to Branch Manager. The ability to effectively lead, supervise and troubleshoot complex heavy lifts, ensure compliance with operational and safety policies, and empower strong team dynamics will be crucial for the successful applicant.

JOB TYPE: Permanent full-time hourly unionized position. The successful applicant must be willing to join IUOE Local 793.

LOCATION: 105 West St. Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6A 7B4, Canada

HOURS: Monday through Friday, within business operating hours. Normal hours are between 7:00AM - 3:30 PM EST with the potential of OT as needed.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to) :

  • Supervise and coordinate crane and rigging operations for various projects, ensuring timely and safe execution.

  • Conduct site assessments, plan lifts, and determine the most effective rigging and lifting strategies.

  • Lead a team of riggers, operators, and crew members, providing direction and guidance on job tasks.

  • Ensure all crane and rigging activities comply with company policies, safety standards, and industry regulations.

  • Collaborate with project managers, clients, and site supervisors to ensure proper coordination of equipment and resources.

  • Perform visual inspections of cranes, rigging equipment, and job sites to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

  • Train and mentor crew members, operators, apprentices in safe crane operation, rigging techniques, assembly/ disassembly and equipment maintenance.

  • Prepare lift plans, job documentation, and reports for each project.

  • Troubleshoot any issues that arise during crane and rigging operations and make decisions in high-pressure situations.

  • Enforce guidelines outlined in the collective agreements and ensure unionized employees are following guidelines when submitting time. Work with admin to validate on site time entries are accurate.

  • Ensure operators have completed work orders and have submitted labor hours on a daily basis. Verify that information is correct on all submissions.

  • Review FLRA's that have been submitted on a weekly basis, and ensure operators are aware of areas to improve on. Follow up with operators that require improvement.

  • Conduct all work in a professional, ethical manner, leading by example to achieve a workplace where there is zero tolerance toward unsafe work behaviors.

  • Conduct all work acting in the best interest of Sterling Crane and safety of all personnel.

  • Be the first point of contact for any incidents and report all incidents to Branch Manager and HSE.

  • At all times adhere by and enforce the companies Risk Sensitive Rules also known as RSR's.

Qualifications:

  • 339A Crane Operator License, AZ Ontario Driver's license and clean Driver's Abstract.

  • Servant leadership style focuses primarily on the growth and well-being of our people.

  • Thorough knowledge of lifting equipment, rigging methods, and industry best practices.

  • Strong understanding of safety standards (Z-150, ANSI, CSA, OH&S legislation, etc.) and crane inspection protocols.

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, lift plans, and engineering drawings. 3D crane planner software is considered an asset.

  • Proven leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and manage teams.

  • Understanding of Lean5S methods and how it applies to our industry.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick, sound decisions under pressure.

  • Valid Class G driver's license and the ability to travel as needed for out-of-town projects.

  • Thorough understanding and ability to interpret the IUOE local 793 union's collective agreement.

  • Advanced understanding of commercial rules & regulations, traffic act law, ELD's, hours of service, load securement.
