How much do applied physicist jobs pay per year?

As of May 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for applied physicist in Florida is $70,847.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $44,100.00 and $83,700.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Applied Physicist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Applied Physicist, you need a strong background in physics, mathematics, and problem-solving, typically supported by at least a bachelor's or master's degree in physics or a related field. Familiarity with laboratory instruments, simulation software (such as MATLAB or COMSOL), and data analysis tools is commonly required, and additional certifications in specialized areas can be advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, creativity, and clear communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with interdisciplinary teams and presenting complex findings. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing practical solutions to real-world problems and advancing innovation in scientific and technological industries.

What are some common interdisciplinary collaborations involved in an Applied Physicist role?

Applied Physicists frequently work alongside engineers, material scientists, computer scientists, and industry specialists to develop practical solutions based on physical principles. These collaborations often involve joint research projects, product development, and troubleshooting complex technical challenges. Teamwork is essential, as applied physics projects typically require input from multiple fields to move from theoretical concepts to real-world applications, such as developing medical devices, renewable energy technologies, or advanced manufacturing processes.

What are applied physicists?

Applied physicists are scientists who use principles and theories of physics to solve practical problems and develop new technologies. Unlike theoretical physicists, who focus on understanding the fundamental laws of nature, applied physicists work on translating those principles into real-world applications. They may work in diverse fields such as engineering, materials science, electronics, medical technology, and energy. Their work often involves research, experimentation, and collaboration with engineers and other scientists to innovate and improve products, processes, or instruments.

Job description

Applied Physics Specialist (AI Training)
About the Role
What if your mastery of quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to put cutting-edge Large Language Models through their paces - designing rigorous problems, auditing AI reasoning, and documenting exactly where models violate the fundamental laws of physics.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and specialists who think in first principles. No prior AI experience needed - just deep domain expertise and an uncompromising eye for physical correctness.
  • Organization
    : Alignerr
  • Type
    : Hourly Contract
  • Location
    : Remote
  • Commitment
    : 10-40 hours/week
  • What You'll Do
    • Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at the PhD qualifying exam level - multi-step, mathematically rigorous, and deliberately challenging for AI systems
    • Author definitive "golden" solutions with precise step-by-step derivations, correct physical constants, and flawless unit conversions
    • Audit AI-generated proofs and simulations for physical consistency - identifying where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles
    • Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and physically constrained systems
    • Work across core physics domains including Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
    • Complete task-based assignments independently on your own schedule
    Who You Are
    • Hold a PhD (completed or nearing completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
    • Deep, practitioner-level command of the core pillars of physics - Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
    • Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
    • Uncompromising attention to detail - you notice a wrong sign, a missing dimension, or a broken symmetry immediately
    • Self-motivated and reliable when working independently on technical tasks
    • No prior AI or machine learning experience required
    Nice to Have
    • Prior experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality review for research content
    • Proficiency with computational tools such as Python (NumPy/SciPy), MATLAB, or COMSOL
    • Background in research benchmarking or academic problem design
    • Familiarity with AI tools or LLMs as an end user
    Why Join Us
    • Work on high-impact AI projects alongside the world's leading research labs
    • Fully remote and flexible - work when and where it suits you
    • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, intellectually stimulating work
    • Gain direct exposure to how frontier AI models are trained and evaluated
    • Contribute to ensuring AI reasoning is grounded in physical reality - work that genuinely matters
    • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
