Job Summary
The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi(USM) invites applicants for a one-year, full-time, non-tenure track Visiting AssistantProfessor position beginning in August 2025 with requirements to be physicallypresent on the Hattiesburg and/or Gulf Coast campuses. The Elementary Educationfaculty currently provide training to initial and advanced teaching licensurecandidates in Elementary Education. We are especially interested in candidateswhose experience includes bridging research and practice in P-12 elementaryeducation, literacy and/or mathematics education, special education, culturallyinclusive education, assessment, and clinical supervision. We aim to recruit applicants with a backgroundin Curriculum and Instruction who will support the School of Education'sElementary Education programs including a Bachelor's degree in ElementaryEducation and a Master's of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction(Elementary Education). Program delivery includes face-to-face, online, andhybrid formats.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Teaching and mentoring students.
  2. Supervising elementary and special education clinical experiences.
  3. Demonstrating an understanding of cultural competence.
  4. Contributing to the mission of the School and profession through service activities.
  5. Collaborating with colleagues on program development and enhancement.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsThe ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Advanced degree in Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or closely related field (by August 2025).
  • Two (2) or more years of full-time teaching experience with standards-based curriculum in a P-12 classroom.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Excellentwritten and verbal communication skills, allowing for effective and timelyengagement.
  • Ability to work with teams in multiple settings.
  • Experience with online learning platforms.
  • Experience setting clear performance expectations and provision of meaningful feedback.

Preferred QualificationsPreferred qualifications include:
  • An earned doctoral degree
  • Experience with literacy, mathematics, or special education
  • Experience leading others in implementing evidence-based instructional practices in P-12 settings (e.g., academic coach, district curriculum lead, professional learning community leader, or settings with students who have high incidence disabilities)
  • Experience incorporating technology in instruction and assessment
