Job description

Team up with the most innovative company where Imagination becomes reality! E Ink is the originator, pioneer, and commercial leader in ePaper technology. The Billerica Research & Development team is thriving and growing as we help develop products that are changing how people access information every day. We are seeking qualified candidates who are self-driven, looking to advance their career and become a high-impact player on a team.

Based on technology from MIT’s Media Lab, E Ink has transformed and defined the eReader market. Its Electrophoretic Display products make it the worldwide leader for ePaper. The Company’s corporate philosophy aims to deliver revolutionary products, user experiences and environmental benefits through advanced technology development.

Our diversity of people, backgrounds, experiences, thoughts and perspectives is fostered to create an inclusive work environment.

Our culture is built on value commitments to innovation, quality, results, integrity, community, people, and collaboration that fosters a strong employee engagement, teamwork, safety and wellness.

We’re looking for a Co-op in Applied Materials Research!

About the Position:

This is a six-month co-op starting in July 2026 in the Research and Advanced Development group. The Co-op will work directly with our scientists and will have the opportunity to get substantial research experience and to work independently on projects.

In this role, the candidate will contribute to the development of a comprehensive, physics-informed model that captures the behavior of electrophoretic pigments in next-generation ePaper systems. The primary objective is to build models that approximate:

  • The dynamics of pigment motion under applied electrical waveforms (voltage vs. time)
  • The resulting optical properties across different particle configurations and device states

This work will involve combining coarse-grained modeling approaches with data-driven techniques, including neural networks, to bridge multiple length and time scales. The candidate will collaborate closely with scientists to integrate simulation, theory, and experimental validation.

Tasks will be varied and include opportunities to learn about encapsulation technologies, make/modify pigments and test some of the display components as well as work with the final devices using the latest E Ink technology.

The co-op must exhibit safe lab practices at all times and be capable of continuously learning new equipment and laboratory techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop multiscale and coarse-grained models to describe pigment behavior in electrophoretic systems
  • Build physics-informed or data-driven models (e.g., neural networks) to capture pigment dynamics under applied electric fields
  • Perform force field parameterization and optimization for particle-level simulations
  • Simulate and analyze electro-optical responses as a function of waveform and material properties
  • Conduct wet chemistry experiments to formulate and encapsulate ink systems (coacervation, UV-curable polymers, etc.)
  • Test electrical and electro-optical performance of polymers
  • Organize chemical property data of materials and work with scientists to design and carry out experiments
  • Document the results of project landmarks and deliver project presentations to a technical community

Qualifications:

  • Student pursuing a Master’s or Ph.D. in Physics, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or Material Science
  • Strong background in physics-based modeling and simulation
  • Experience with coarse-graining or multiscale modeling techniques
  • Familiarity with neural networks / machine learning for physical systems
  • Experience in force field development or parameter optimization
  • Strong data analysis and programming skills (e.g., with Python, MATLAB, or similar)
  • Strong materials characterization and data analysis skills
  • Good technical writing and oral communication skills
  • Good organization skills and the capacity to manage own schedule

Preferences:

  • Understanding of colloids, soft matter physics, and surface science
  • Experience with electrokinetics, colloidal transport, or particle dynamics under external fields (electric, magnetic, or flow fields)
  • Hands-on experience with wet lab experiments and materials characterization
  • Familiarity with electro-optical measurements or display technologies

Benefits:

  • Medical coverage
  • 3.08 hours of ITO (Intern time off) per payroll
  • 401(k)
  • Casual day to day work environment

E Ink is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce. E Ink is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, identity, sexual orientation, veteran’s status, disability, age, or on any basis prohibited by federal and state law.

Salary Range Disclosure: The hourly pay range for this position is $28.00 to $40.00. The salary range for this position reflects a reasonable estimate at the time of posting and may vary based on factors such as experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
