What jobs can you get with applied cryptography?

Applied cryptography skills can lead to roles such as cryptographer, security analyst, security engineer, or cryptography researcher. These jobs typically require knowledge of encryption algorithms, security protocols, and programming languages like Python or C, often within cybersecurity or information security teams.

What does an applied cryptography professional do?

Applied cryptography professionals are typically responsible for designing, implementing, and reviewing cryptographic protocols, analyzing and improving the security of existing systems, and addressing vulnerabilities as they arise. Day-to-day tasks may include creating technical documentation, collaborating with software engineering and security teams, and performing security audits or code reviews. You'll also stay up-to-date on emerging threats and new cryptographic research to inform your work. This role is highly collaborative, often requiring close coordination with developers, architects, and compliance officers to ensure robust security solutions across projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in applied cryptography?

To thrive in applied cryptography, you need a strong background in mathematics, computer science, and cryptographic algorithms, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications like CISSP or CEH. Familiarity with programming languages such as C, C++, Python, and experience with cryptographic libraries (e.g., OpenSSL, Bouncy Castle) are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are valuable soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for designing, implementing, and maintaining secure cryptographic solutions that protect sensitive data in real-world applications.

What is an applied cryptography?

An Applied Cryptography job involves designing, implementing, and analyzing cryptographic systems to secure data and communications. Professionals in this field work on encryption algorithms, digital signatures, secure protocols, and cryptographic libraries to protect sensitive information from cyber threats. They collaborate with security teams, software engineers, and researchers to ensure cryptographic solutions are robust and efficient. Strong knowledge of mathematics, cryptographic principles, and programming languages like C, Python, or Java is often required.

  • Develop security and privacy controls for on-device AI features, including model integrity, sensitive data handling, inference-time privacy protections, and local policy enforcement.
  • Ability to perform security analysis, threat modeling, vulnerability assessment, secure code review, fuzzing, static analysis, dynamic analysis, and automated security validation across OS, firmware and AI/ML system boundaries.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience developing production software in one or more programming languages such as C, C++, Rust.
  • 3+ years of experience building security, privacy, or platform protection features for Linux-based, embedded, mobile, wearable, or connected device systems.
  • Experience with applied cryptography, authentication, authorization, secure communications, key management, threat modeling, vulnerability assessment, or system security for embedded or Linux-based systems.
