Youth Empowerment Internship Description



About Us:

4th Second is a nonprofit organization dedicated to driving systemic change and fostering collaboration to bridge the gap between community needs and resources. Based in Solano County, with a focus on Vallejo, we specialize in Enhanced Care Management, employment and support services, and youth programs. Our work serves a wide-range of individuals, including youth and adults who are unhoused, at-risk, or justice-involved.


At 4th Second, we are committed to trauma-informed and harm reduction approaches, offering services such as street medicine, healthcare coordination, mental health counseling, youth substance use and suicide prevention, workforce development, and community-driven initiatives for food and housing sovereignty.


Our mission is simple: to meet people where they are, empower them with the care and resources they need, and support their journey toward holistic well-being.


Overview of the Postiton

4th Second's Youth Team is committed to serving BIPOC populations in Solano County, people experiencing homelessness, people who have been justice impacted, and individuals with low incomes. We strive to remove socioeconomic barriers with youth substance use and suicide prevention, whole person workforce development, and community development to support self-sufficiency.

As a Youth Empowerment Intern you will primarily support 4th Second's youth programming, youth leader projects, and fostering a welcoming culture that nurtures youth's needs, individuality, and self-determined aspirations. We are excited to build a community alongside you and enjoy your contributions to the growth and vitality of 4th Second.


Core Responsibilities

Youth Leader Projects:

  • Understand and utilize project management plan to support youth leader projects
  • Conduct weekly check ins to define progress and hold Youth accountable

Support Youth Programming:

  • Assist in preparing the space and materials needed for programming
  • Confidently explain the Youth Program to people inquiring

Safety Measures:

  • Ensure safety indoors and outdoors by identifying and addressing potential hazards

Driving & Transportation:

  • Complete pickups of plants, food boxes, tools, and materials to support programming and community events

Requited Qualfications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in a team setting
  • Creativity in developing and implementing activities
  • Patience and understanding when working with youth in Peer to peer mentoring
  • Flexible scheduling and willingness to learn new things
  • Represent oneself and the organization in the community


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in Google Suite, email, internet, and calendaring applications
  • Proficient in another language other than English
  • Confident in community engagement and outreach with youth and potential partners


Physical Demands;

  • Lifting and moving up to 25 lbs including: food boxes, cleaning supplies, art materials, etc.
  • Able to kneel, bend, and carry items on a regular basis


Key Performance Indiciators

  • Participate in performance evaluation by your direct supervisor
  • Able to support the completion of youth leader projects and achieve learning objectives associated with 4th Second's mission.


Work Environment

This position operates in public and private community spaces such as indoor youth centers and community gardens. The role may involve exposure to unsanitary conditions such as handling trash, food waste, restrooms. Navigating interactions with different personalities in public. Interns are expected to follow all safety protocols and demonstrate cultural competency and trauma-informed care in all interactions.
