What does an application engineer do?

An Application Engineer acts as a bridge between customers and engineering teams, helping to design, develop, and implement technical solutions that meet client needs. They often customize software or hardware products, provide technical support, and assist with product demonstrations or training. Application Engineers also analyze customer requirements, troubleshoot issues, and help improve products based on user feedback. Their role requires strong technical knowledge, communication skills, and problem-solving abilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an application engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Application Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, software development, and problem-solving, often backed by a degree in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with programming languages, CAD tools, and platforms like MATLAB or AutoCAD, as well as certifications in relevant software, is typically required. Strong communication, customer service orientation, and project management skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities ensure effective solution delivery, seamless client interactions, and the successful implementation of technical projects.

What are some common challenges application engineers face when balancing customer requirements with technical feasibility?

Application Engineers often serve as the bridge between customers and the technical teams, which means they regularly encounter situations where client requests may not align perfectly with existing product capabilities. A key challenge is clearly communicating technical limitations while offering alternative solutions that address the customer’s core needs. Successful Application Engineers proactively manage expectations, coordinate with development teams, and stay updated on product roadmaps to suggest realistic enhancements. Developing strong relationships with both customers and internal teams is essential to navigate these challenges effectively.

Job description

Applications Engineer – CNC Swiss (Citizen & Miyano)

📍 Warren, MI

💰 $38–$40/hour | Based on Experience

Schedule

Monday–Thursday: 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Friday: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM & Saturday 6 AM - 12 PM (When Needed)

Overtime: Fridays and Saturdays as needed

💼 Direct Hire

Are you the person everyone in the machine shop comes to when a setup isn’t running right, tooling needs to be improved, or a cycle time needs to come down?

We’re looking for an experienced CNC Applications Engineer / Applications Leader to become a go-to technical resource within a precision machining operation in Warren, MI.

This is not your typical production machinist position. You won’t spend every day simply running parts. Instead, you’ll work directly with CNC machinists, operators, and engineering to troubleshoot problems, improve setups, optimize tooling, reduce cycle times, support programming, launch new parts, and help develop the team around you.

🛠️ What You’ll Be Doing

• Support CNC machine setups, changeovers, and process prove-outs

• Troubleshoot machining, tooling, quality, and production issues

• Perform tooling studies and identify opportunities for improvement

• Monitor and improve cycle times and machine efficiency

• Make programming adjustments and support CNC programming needs

• Assist with new-part planning and launches

• Work alongside the Process Engineer on continuous improvement projects

• Help improve tooling organization and spare-parts coordination

• Train and provide technical guidance to machinists and operators

• Step in for machine coverage/operator relief when needed

• Serve as a hands-on technical leader on the shop floor

🎯 What We’re Looking For

We’re especially interested in candidates with strong experience working with Citizen and/or Miyano CNC Swiss machines who understand more than simply operating the equipment.

You should bring experience with areas such as:

• CNC Swiss machining

• Machine setup and changeovers

• CNC programming and program adjustments

• Troubleshooting

• Tooling selection and optimization

• Speeds and feeds

• Cycle-time reduction

• New-part launches

• Process improvement

• Training or mentoring machinists

👀 Your Current Title Might Be...

CNC Swiss Programmer • CNC Swiss Setup Technician • CNC Lead Machinist • Applications Engineer • CNC Programmer/Machinist • CNC Cell Lead • CNC Trainer • Swiss Machining Supervisor • CNC Production Lead

If you’re a highly experienced machinist who has naturally become the “go-to person” in your shop, we want to hear from you.

Why Join?

$38–$40/hour based on experience

✅ Opportunity for long-term employment

✅ Get off the repetitive production cycle and into a technical leadership role

✅ Hands-on involvement with programming, setups, tooling, and process improvement

✅ Opportunity to train and develop other machinists

✅ Specialized precision machining environment with room to grow

📲 Interested?
