Job description

A123 Systems, LLC is a leading developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries and battery systems for the transportation and commercial markets.
Position Overview
Application Engineer responsible for the design and development of lithium ion battery packs. Candidate should have a strong knowledge of the automotive development process, overall engineering discipline that involves mechanical / electrical / software engineering, and the leadership to lead a design into an on-time product launch. Engineer would be engaged in the ownership of the product from the New Business Opportunity through the production launch. This is an opportunity for a creative individual with a keen understanding of product design that places safety as the foremost deliverable while effectively balancing performance, reliability, serviceability, and costs while meeting the delivery of customer requirements.
Primary responsibilities
  • Engineering lead - product owner for customer and manager of engineering team to fulfill program deliverables.
  • Manage product validation from given customer requirements through start of production, including testing startup troubleshooting. Worked with testing teams and customer to create and implement design / production validation plans along with any regulatory requirements such as KMVSS / ECER100 / GBT / UN38.3 / USCAR.
  • DFMEA battery platform lead and product variant owner, led core and product variants work for function nets, failure nets, risk mitigation, RPN reductions, CC/SC lists. Familiar with AIAG / VDA formats to support customer meetings. Support the DFMEA integration to the PFMEA for PPAP deliverables.
  • Ensure product requirements were driven into the design and system with the requirements traceability per ASPICE methodology while maintaining the engineering documents for customer releases in Doors Next Gen.
  • Direct, coordinate, and prioritize the technical deliverables for engineering team working with program management in program reviews of hardware, software and systems while supporting validation in the creation of testing plans identifying root cause and corrective action on test failures.
  • On-site customer and testing house support for integration and troubleshooting of battery systems.
  • Support sales team as well as the customer to identify resolutions to potential customer requirements
  • Drive technical reviews with product development team, management and customers
  • Perform risk analysis on issues in the development of the product such as production / testing impacts on program milestones ratings.

Education/Experience
The position requires review and analysis of system requirements, executing and evaluating designs, performing design analysis, supporting DV/PV testing, and leading complex engineering projects. Must be able to balance system requirements versus technical constraints and cost targets.
  • Multiple years in product design and engineering
    • Experience contributing as a core team member on a cross-functional product development team
    • Development and tracing of requirements per ASPICE methodology
    • Experience in the design, development, testing, and integration of battery management systems in advanced energy storage systems including lithium-ion batteries
    • Experience in the production and/or product launch of lithium-ion battery systems
    • Familiar in Battery Management System software development and validation

  • Required Education: B.S.M.E.
  • Preferred Education: M.S.M.E.
  • 7-10 years' experience in the field of automotive or energy storage engineering.
