Job Description
2027 Business Technology Solutions (BTS) Internship
Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for participants in the Business Technology Solutions (BTS) Internship Program at AbbVie.
The Intern will be aligned to either a Data Engineering or Software/Application Engineering track:
Software/Application Engineering:
The Software/Application Intern will help design, build, and maintain enterprise applications across the stack while applying technical and business knowledge, analytical thinking, and creative problem-solving. Responsibilities may include:
  • Front End: develop, test, and maintain highly interactive, responsive user interfaces
  • Back End: build backend services, APIs, and microservices in Java (Spring Boot); implement server-side logic, workflows, and data pipelines; optimize performance, scalability, and reliability
  • Full Stack: own both front-end and back-end components end to end

Data Engineering:
The Data Engineering Intern will help build, maintain, and optimize the data infrastructure, including databases and data pipelines. Responsibilities could include:
  • Support the design and development of data, software, or technology solutions to answer scientific or business questions
  • Leverage a range of technologies related to programming languages, data integration, data warehousing, and data visualization and analysis
  • Help build, maintain, and optimize data infrastructure
  • Ensure data is collected, processed, and stored efficiently and securely
  • Integrate different data sources and create the foundations on which analytics and data science can operate

This is an 11-week onsite internship. The majority of BTS Interns will be placed in Lake County, IL, though there is a possibility of being placed within any U.S. AbbVie or Allergan Aesthetics location. While location preferences are considered, placements will ultimately be based on business need.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, AI or related majors with a minor or concentration in one of the above fields
  • Graduation date between December 2027 - June 2028
  • Must be enrolled in university the semester following your internship and graduate within 1-year post internship

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Software/Application Engineering Track: school or work experience with the following: Front End - NodeJS, Vue.js, HTML; Back End - Java, JavaScript; Full Stack - Java, SQL, TypeScript; APEX or Python; ability to apply generative AI to custom software solutions. Public code portfolio (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket) highly preferred
  • Data Engineering Track: strong programming experience in Java, Python, R, and SQL. Experience using APIs to extract data and applying large language models or machine learning algorithms
  • Previous internship or related experience
  • Technical and business insight, strong analytical skills, and creative problem-solving abilities
  • Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, initiative, and integrity
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher
