Job description

We are seeking a Senior Appian Plugin Developer to support a structured Appian Cloud migration engagement delivered through an Autonomous Delivery Pod model. This role is focused on modernizing custom Appian plugins and ensuring full compatibility with Appian Cloud architecture within a regulated enterprise environment.
The selected candidate will operate within a cohesive, outcome-driven delivery team accountable for plugin modernization, application remediation, cloud deployment readiness, and production stabilization.
The Senior Appian Plugin Developer will serve as a hands-on technical contributor responsible for refactoring custom plugins, validating compatibility across the broader plugin inventory, and ensuring migration activities meet cloud, security, and quality standards. This role requires deep expertise in Appian plugin architecture, Java development, and cloud modernization practices.
What You'll Do
  • Refactor custom Appian plugins to remove filesystem, database, and logging dependencies incompatible with Appian Cloud
  • Redesign and modernize plugin components to leverage supported Appian APIs and cloud-compliant integration patterns
  • Validate compatibility of custom and AppMarket plugins within Appian Cloud environments
  • Assess and remediate configuration or deployment gaps identified during plugin validation
  • Implement secure, centralized logging approaches aligned with cloud deployment standards
  • Package and deploy updated plugins across development, testing, and production environments
  • Support regression testing across dependent Appian applications impacted by plugin updates
  • Troubleshoot and resolve defects related to plugin behavior, integrations, or environmental differences
  • Collaborate with Appian Developers to remediate application objects and integrations impacted by cloud migration
  • Partner with DBAs to ensure plugin changes align with data migration and validation activities
  • Participate in structured migration governance processes, including technical documentation, status reporting, and risk tracking
  • Contribute to production cutover preparation, rollback validation planning, and post-migration stabilization
  • Document refactor strategies, compatibility findings, deployment steps, and definitions of done
  • Operate within a defined delivery cadence, maintaining accountability for milestones and technical quality

What We're Looking For
  • Extensive hands-on experience developing custom Appian plugins (smart services, functions, integrations)
  • Strong expertise in Java development and plugin architecture within enterprise environments
  • Deep understanding of Appian Cloud constraints, supported APIs, and architectural best practices
  • Experience refactoring legacy codebases to remove filesystem access, unsupported database dependencies, and non-cloud-compliant logging
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills in complex Appian environments
  • Experience validating and packaging plugins for multi-environment deployment
  • Ability to remain hands-on while working within a structured, governance-driven delivery model
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly document technical findings and recommendations
  • Experience working in regulated environments (financial services or similar)
  • Comfort operating within high-accountability, milestone-driven engagements

Required Skills:
  • 7+ years of professional Java application development experience
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience developing and maintaining custom Appian plugins
  • 3+ years of experience modernizing or refactoring legacy application components for cloud environments
  • 3+ years of experience designing secure integration patterns using RESTful APIs
  • 3+ years of experience implementing and configuring modern logging frameworks (e.g., Log4j2, SLF4J)
  • 3+ years of experience supporting deployments across development, testing, and production environments
  • 3+ years of experience working within multi-team agile or hybrid delivery environments
  • Green Card holder or US Citizenship required
  • Must be able to obtain Public Trust Security clearance.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience supporting Appian Cloud migration initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to assess technical debt and execute structured remediation plans
  • Appian Certified Developer (Senior or Lead preferred)
  • Experience supporting financial services or highly regulated enterprise clients
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps pipelines and secure code scanning practices
  • Experience supporting production cutover and stabilization efforts
  • Agile certification (Scrum, SAFe, or similar)
