What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an API Integration Engineer?

To thrive as an API Integration Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript), a solid understanding of RESTful and SOAP APIs, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with API management platforms (such as Postman, Apigee, or MuleSoft), version control systems like Git, and experience with cloud services are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating across technical and non-technical teams. These competencies ensure robust integration solutions, seamless data flow, and successful cross-system communication essential for business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by API Integration Engineers when working with third-party APIs?

API Integration Engineers often encounter challenges such as inconsistent documentation, unexpected API changes, and varying authentication methods when working with third-party APIs. Handling rate limits and ensuring data security during transmission are also frequent concerns. To address these challenges, engineers need to stay adaptable, communicate proactively with vendors, and implement robust error handling and monitoring. Collaborating closely with product and backend teams helps ensure seamless integration and quick resolution of issues.

About the role
Senior Integration Developer (MuleSoft / Azure API Management)
COUNTRY Financial is seeking a Senior Integration Developer to design, develop, and support enterprise APIs and integrations across our technology landscape. This role is primarily focused on MuleSoft Anypoint Platform, with Azure API Management (APIM) serving as a secondary platform supporting cloud-first and modernization initiatives. This is a hands-on development role responsible for delivering scalable, secure, and supportable integration solutions with limited design oversight. The individual will partner closely with architecture, platform, operations, and delivery teams while adhering to enterprise SDLC and secure development standards.
How does this role make an impact?
  • Designs solutions after gathering business and technical requirements.
  • Develops software solutions that are high performing and meet technical standards.
  • Supports testing and problem solving/debugging of solutions.
  • Implements software solutions following best practices.

What You'll Do
MuleSoft Development
• Design, develop, test, implement, and support MuleSoft APIs and integrations using Mule 4, Anypoint Platform, REST/SOAP services, DataWeave, RAML, and OpenAPI specifications.
• Perform interface analysis, data mapping, payload validation, and
transformation design.
• Develop API-led and reusable integration solutions aligned with enterprise
architecture, secure coding standards, and best practices.
• Build scalable, environment-agnostic deployment solutions and reusable
integration patterns.
• Support production applications through troubleshooting, enhancements, and defect resolution.
Azure API Management
• Design, deploy, and maintain APIs and gateways using Azure API Management.
• Implement APIM policies for authentication, routing, transformation, rate
limiting, and traffic management.
• Integrate APIM with Azure services including Functions, Logic Apps, App Services, Service Bus, and Key Vault.
• Support CI/CD automation and Infrastructure-as-Code deployment practices.
• Configure API security using OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWT, Managed Identities, client certificates, and API keys.
Integration Operations & Delivery
• Own assigned API and integration work through the full software
development lifecycle, from requirements analysis through production
deployment and validation.
• Collaborate with architects, analysts, developers, and DevOps teams to
deliver enterprise integration solutions.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize APIs and integration services using tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and MuleSoft Anypoint Monitoring.
• Improve reliability, observability, performance, and operational readiness across integration platforms.
Position Summary
Serves as a technical expert responsible for designing, developing, testing,
implementing, supporting, and enhancing enterprise software solutions. Participates throughout the full software development lifecycle, including
requirements analysis, design, technical documentation, troubleshooting,
maintenance, and production support.
Do you have what we're looking for?
Required Qualifications
  • Typically requires 10+ years of relevant experience or a combination of education, training, and related experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in enterprise integration, middleware, or API development.
  • 3+ years of hands-on MuleSoft development experience with Mule 4, CloudHub 2.0, and Anypoint Platform.
  • 2+ years of experience developing cloud-native solutions in Microsoft Azure with a focus on API architecture and Azure API Management (APIM).
  • Strong experience designing, developing, testing, deploying, and supporting RESTful APIs, SOAP services, API specifications, integration flows, and reusable services.
  • Strong experience with DataWeave, JSON, XML, flat files, relational data, SQL, and data transformation concepts.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Git-based development, testing, deployment support, release validation, and production support.
  • Experience troubleshooting integration issues, analyzing runtime behavior,
resolving defects and performing performance tuning.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure API Management, including API publishing, policies, products, versioning, security, gateway concepts, and integration with Azure Functions, Logic Apps, Service Bus, and Key Vault.
  • Working knowledge of authentication and authorization methods including OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, certificates, API keys, JWT, and managed identities.
  • Experience working within medium-to-large enterprise environments following formal SDLC, secure development, documentation, and production support practices.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience modernizing or migrating integrations across MuleSoft,
Azure-native platforms, or hybrid integration environments.
  • Experience with MUnit, automated testing, and API/integration regression testing.
  • Knowledge of Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP), API-led connectivity,
event-driven architecture, and asynchronous integration patterns.
  • Experience implementing observability, monitoring, alerting, logging, and
operational readiness practices for integration services.
