What is an api inspection?

An API Inspection job involves inspecting pressure vessels, piping systems, and storage tanks according to standards set by the American Petroleum Institute (API). Inspectors assess equipment for corrosion, cracks, and other defects to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability in industries like oil and gas, power plants, and refineries. They use techniques such as visual inspection, ultrasonic testing, and magnetic particle testing. API Inspectors must be certified (e.g., API 510, API 570, API 653) and adhere to industry regulations to prevent failures and accidents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in api inspection?

To thrive as an API Inspector, you need a solid understanding of inspection techniques, industrial codes (such as API 510, 570, or 653), and knowledge of corrosion and welding processes, often supported by relevant certifications. Proficiency in using inspection tools, non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment, and report generation systems is essential. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help you identify issues and clearly document findings. These abilities ensure safe, compliant operations and reliable inspection reporting in industries like oil, gas, and petrochemicals.

What typical challenges might an api inspector encounter on the job?

API Inspectors often work in environments that pose challenges such as difficult-to-access inspection sites, inclement weather, and tight deadlines to minimize production downtime. They must stay updated on evolving industry standards and regulations while accurately identifying issues like corrosion, leaks, or code non-compliance. Collaboration with maintenance crews, engineers, and management is common, as API Inspectors provide critical information for repair and maintenance decisions. Adaptability and a commitment to safety are crucial for managing these challenges and ensuring inspections are both thorough and efficient.

How do you become an API inspector?

To become an API inspector, individuals typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training in nondestructive testing methods such as ultrasonic, radiographic, or magnetic particle testing. Certification from recognized organizations like the American Petroleum Institute (API) is often required, which involves passing written and practical exams, and gaining relevant work experience in the oil and gas or industrial inspection fields.

What does an API inspection do?

An API inspection involves evaluating equipment, materials, or processes to ensure compliance with standards set by the American Petroleum Institute. For API inspectors, this includes reviewing documentation, performing visual and functional assessments, and verifying that safety and quality requirements are met, often using specialized tools and following strict procedures. The role requires attention to detail, knowledge of industry codes, and certification in API standards.

Inspection Sales Representative

Reliance Fire Protection Inc

Capitol Heights, MD • On-site

$65K - $80K/yr

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, Retirement, PTO

Re-posted 27 days ago

Job description

Tired of selling something people don't actually need?

Fire Sprinkler & Alarm inspections aren't "nice to have" - they're mandated by Federal, State and Local code, recur each year, and are essential to keeping buildings and the people inside them safe. That means no economic-cycle whiplash, no discretionary-spend objections, and no quarter where your pipeline evaporates because a CFO got nervous.

If you're a hunter who's ready to build a durable book of business - the kind that compounds for years instead of resetting every January - read on.

The Role

You'll grow Reliance Fire Protection's fire sprinkler and alarm inspection business through their established customer base and hunt new fire system inspection logos in the Multifamily Residential/Apartment market, focused on Washington DC and Northern Virginia from our Capital Heights office. This is a field-based, relationship-driven hunting seat - cross-selling, site surveys, target account development, and long-term partnerships built on value.

It is not a cold-call only, all day on the phone sales job. We win on trust, expertise, and showing up - not on pressure.

Prior fire & life safety experience is a plus but not required. We'll teach you the technical side. What we can't teach is work ethic, attention to detail, and genuine curiosity about your customer's business -  that part is on you.

Why Top Sales Professionals Choose Reliance Fire & the DU Family of Companies

  • Compensation that compounds. Competitive base + a bonus plan that rewards you again and again for every year of each agreement.
  • Backed by APi Group. We're part of APi Group - publicly traded, #486 in the Fortune 500, multi-billion-dollar parent and the largest Fire & Life Safety company on the planet who's been around for 100 years. Stability, resources, and world-class support behind every call you make.
  • 35+ locations, one team. Reliance Fire shares playbooks, training, insights, and best practices across the DU Family of Companies - from the East Coast to the Midwest. You're never selling alone.
  • People stay. A meaningful chunk of our team has been here for 15+ years. We invest in the right people and keep them.
  • Equity in the outcome. Profit sharing and Employee Stock Purchase Plan - you own a piece of what you help build.
  • Values-first hiring. Culture fit isn't a buzzword here; it's written into how we recruit.

What You'll Actually Do

  • Hunt new full scope Fire System inspection logos through referrals, networking, prospecting, and showing up in the rooms where DC & Northern Virginia's Multifamily Residential facility leaders already gather.
  • Cross-sell our existing Fire Sprinkler Inspection customer base into our world-class Fire Alarm and Monitoring Inspection services.
  • Build a disciplined territory plan with smart daily routing - you run your market like a business.
  • Present our value to General Managers, Facility Directors, and Building Engineers.
  • Negotiate and close multi-year inspection agreements.
  • Keep your CRM clean - accurate pipeline, activity, and forecast.
  • Stay sharp on industry trends, code changes, and competitor moves.
  • Partner with your branch team and Inspection Department Leader to deliver for the customer.

What We're Looking For

  • 2 years of documented outside hunting / new-logo sales experience with a self-sourced pipeline.
  • Track record of defending premium pricing against low-bid competitors - you sell value, not discounts.
  • Comfort running complex, multi-stakeholder B2B deals with sales cycles that can run 12+ months.
  • Self-directed territory manager - organized, disciplined, and productive with an outstanding team behind you to help deliver world-class inspections & service.
  • Strong CRM habits and Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Based in (or willing to relocate to) the Washington DC or Northern Virginia area.
  • Valid driver's license, clean record.
  • High school diploma / GED required; bachelor's preferred.
  • Multifamily Residential/Apartment/Condo facilities sales background is a genuine plus - but not required.
  • Working knowledge of fire & life safety systems is helpful, not mandatory.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary + compounding bonus plan
  • Equity-based profit sharing and Employee Stock Purchase Plan
  • Medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with company match, and paid time off
  • Company vehicle or vehicle allowance, fuel card, laptop, and mobile phone
  • Real career runway inside one of the strongest platforms in the industry

The annual salary for this position is $65,000 - $80,000, dependent on experience and qualifications, plus bonuses as outlined above.

One Last Thing

If you have a passion for protecting what the people of DC & Northern Virginia value most - and you're ready to build something that lasts - we'd like to meet you.

Veterans, reservists, and National Guard members are strongly encouraged to apply.

Davis-Ulmer Family of Companies is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees and applicants. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
