What is an API analyst?

An API Analyst is a professional who specializes in analyzing, designing, and optimizing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that allow different software systems to communicate with each other. They work closely with developers, business stakeholders, and IT teams to ensure APIs meet technical and business requirements. Their responsibilities often include documenting APIs, monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and recommending improvements for better integration and functionality.

How does an API analyst typically collaborate with development and business teams during a project?

API Analysts play a crucial role in bridging the gap between technical and business teams. They work closely with developers to ensure that APIs are designed and documented according to business requirements, and often translate technical jargon for stakeholders. Collaboration often involves gathering requirements, participating in design discussions, and coordinating testing efforts to confirm that APIs meet both functional and security standards. Regular communication and problem-solving are key, as API Analysts help ensure smooth integration and address any emerging issues promptly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an API analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as an API Analyst, you need a strong understanding of software development concepts, API protocols (such as REST and SOAP), and analytical skills, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with API management tools (like Postman, Swagger, or Apigee), and knowledge of data formats such as JSON and XML, are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills help you translate technical requirements and coordinate between development teams and stakeholders. These abilities are essential to ensure efficient API integration, optimal functionality, and alignment with business objectives.

What is the difference between Api Analyst vs Data Analyst?

Job description

Company Overview:
Lightspeed is the leading provider of cloud-based software for dealerships, serving the Powersport, Marine, RV, Trailer, and Golf Car industries adding hundreds of dealerships to the Lightspeed community each year.
Lightspeed's Dealer Management Solution (DMS) enables dealerships to optimize their end-to-end business operations, including Sales, Parts, Service, Rentals, Payments, Accounting, and Customer Relationship Management (CRM). When implemented into their daily operations, Lightspeed helps dealers increase their profitability by selling more units, service, and parts, all while creating a more streamlined experience for customers.
Lightspeed is the most complete and integrated DMS in the industry with over 500 integrations with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), aftermarket parts and accessory distributors and dozens of other software tools that a dealership may use to run their business. Uniquely designed by dealers for dealers, and refined over the past 4 decades, Lightspeed empowers over 4,500+ dealers across North America with the tools and technology they need to manage their dealerships.
We are seeking a Data Analyst - API to maintain the API-based data integrations that connect Lightspeed's DMS platform with OEMs, aftermarket manufacturers, and internal teams. This individual will implement and support RESTful API integrations and reporting solutions, partnering closely with engineering, data platform, and cross-functional teams to keep dealer data flowing accurately across all Lightspeed data platforms.
This role has direct impact on dealer-facing data integrity: the integrations this person builds and maintains determine whether OEM programs, manufacturer data feeds, and dealer reporting are accurate and timely. The role combines hands-on API development with data analysis and reporting and requires close collaboration with internal and external technical stakeholders.
What You'll Do
API Development & Integration
  • Support and help maintain RESTful API integrations connecting Lightspeed's DMS platform to OEM systems, aftermarket manufacturer data feeds, and internal platforms.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve API connectivity, authentication, and data flow issues for internal and external clients, including OEM and dealer partners.
  • Document API integration specifications and data mappings for internal and partner-facing use.

Reporting & Data Solutions
  • Build and support customized reporting solutions using SQL (Microsoft and Postgres) and Power BI.
  • Perform data classification and validation to ensure accuracy and security across dealer and OEM datasets.

Client & Partner Support
  • Support internal and external client inbound requests related to API integrations and data feeds.
  • Collaborate with OEM and aftermarket manufacturer technical contacts to gather and validate integration requirements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with engineering, data platform, and product teams to meet diverse data requirements across sales, parts, service, rentals, and accounting modules.
  • Explore and adopt new tools and techniques across SQL, APIs, SSIS, and Power BI.
What You Should Have
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Working knowledge of RESTful API design, development, and integration.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft SQL; familiarity with PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with Python, Node.JS, and/or SSIS for building data pipelines.
  • Exposure to dealer, franchise, or vertical SaaS business models, or strong interest in learning the dealer/OEM data ecosystem.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Power BI or SSRS reporting.
  • Prior experience integrating with OEM, manufacturer, or partner-facing APIs.
  • Interest in the Powersports, Marine, RV, Trailer, Outdoor Power Equipment, or Golf Cart industries.
