Job description

Phillips 66 & YOU - Together we can fuel the future
The Advanced Process Control and Automation (APC&A) Sr Engineer II will be responsible for identifying, prioritizing and executing and supporting APC application for multiple gas processing facilities. In addition, the position will help strengthen the Advanced Process Controls Network for Phillips 66 Midstream by developing and using best practices, and training the site operators on how to utilize the Advanced Control and Optimization applications. Located in Houston, Texas, this position will report to the Manager - Operations Technology, Automation and Systems within the Midstream Center of Excellence organization.
What You'll Do
  • Partner with process engineering and site operations teams to identify, prioritize, develop, and execute advanced process control applications across gas processing facilities.
  • Support day-to-day APC application maintenance, sustain benefits, troubleshoot interfaces with base process control systems, and help maintain strong utilization.
  • Provide consulting and training to operations and engineering teams so advanced control and optimization applications are used consistently and effectively.
  • Develop and apply best practice standards for APC, multiunit optimization, inferential predictor applications, and related process control improvements.
  • Translate automation and process improvement needs into practical road maps, reusable approaches, and prioritized project work.
  • Design, configure, test, implement, and optimize control strategies using DCS and PLC platforms, including related industrial communication networks and interfaces.
  • Assist with software updates, vendor upgrades, peer reviews, technology evaluations, progress reporting, and performance metrics that support decision-making.
  • Work independently while collaborating across teams, managing complexity, and keeping ownership, quality, schedule, and safe work practices at the center of the work.

What You'll Bring - Required
  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field.
  • 10 or more years of relevant experience in automation, process control, process optimization, application development, or a related technical field, with strong knowledge of oil and gas processing operations and systems.
  • Intermediate proficiency designing, implementing, maintaining, or troubleshooting automation solutions, process control systems, DCS, PLC, or related applications.
  • Advanced proficiency with communications interfaces between APC technology and DCS platforms such as Schneider Electric Foxboro, Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell Experion, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar systems.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodations, to comply with the following:
      • Travel up to 30% of the time
      • Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, occasional on-call duties, and holidays
      • Transport articles up to 50 pounds
      • Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines, chemicals, including acids and bases, and around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
      • Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
      • Work outside in harsh weather conditions
      • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

What Makes You Stand Out - Preferred
  • Master's degree or PhD in Chemical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Gas processing knowledge with a strong understanding of process units, interactions among units, business drivers, and natural gas cryogenic processes.
  • Experience with APC and optimization software such as Aspen DMC+/DMC3, Honeywell Profit Suite, Aspen GDOT, Schneider Electric ROMEO, or similar tools.
  • Experience with communications interfaces between APC technology and DCS platforms such as Schneider Electric Foxboro, Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell Experion, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar systems.
  • Knowledge of machine learning, AI, AutoML, data analytics, Python, R, business intelligence, or advanced data analysis and reporting.
  • Experience developing reusable scripts, frameworks, APIs, applications, or tools that improve automation, process performance, or user experience.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while providing guidance, collaborating across teams, and sharing technical expertise.
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices, trust, respect, and clear verbal and written communication.
  • Practical understanding of continuous process operations, process control principles, control loop schemes, loop tuning, software configuration, or structured text programming.
  • Ability to analyze complex business or operational requirements, document current and future state needs, and recommend practical technical solutions.
  • Strong technical capability with industrial communication networks or interfaces such as OPC, Modbus, EtherNet/IP, or similar technologies.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with operations, engineering, IT, contractors, vendors, and technical partners while maintaining accountability for quality, schedule, and outcomes.

Compensation Range
This position has a base salary range of $160,200-$195,800.

Midstream
The Phillips 66 Midstream business is a safe, reliable, and trusted provider for the movement, storage, gathering, and processing of liquid or gas energy via pipelines or terminals. We are an industry leader in logistics and operate or manage more than 70,000 miles of pipelines that transport crude oil from oil fields to refineries and finished products from refineries to storage terminals. We operate 39 terminals that supply finished products to consumer gas stations, as well as crude oil and NGL storage terminals and NGL fractionation facilities. Our capabilities include extensive natural gas gathering and processing operations, enhancing our wellhead-to-market strategy. We also provide the connectivity between the various Phillips 66 business units.
