What is AP Environmental Science?

AP Environmental Science (APES) is a college-level course offered in high schools that introduces students to the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world. The course covers topics such as ecology, biodiversity, energy resources, pollution, and environmental policies. It emphasizes critical thinking, laboratory investigations, and real-world problem-solving related to environmental issues. At the end of the course, students can take the AP exam to potentially earn college credit.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an AP Environmental Science teacher?

To thrive as an AP Environmental Science Teacher, you need a deep understanding of environmental science concepts, a relevant degree, and state teaching certification. Familiarity with AP curriculum frameworks, lab equipment, and digital learning platforms like Google Classroom is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to inspire critical thinking are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure you can effectively teach complex topics, engage students, and prepare them for AP exams and real-world environmental challenges.

What challenges do AP Environmental Science teachers face when engaging students with complex environmental topics?

AP Environmental Science teachers often encounter challenges such as making abstract or technical environmental concepts relatable to students, fostering critical thinking about real-world issues, and balancing lab work with classroom instruction. Engaging students may require integrating current events, hands-on projects, and outdoor activities to make lessons more impactful. Teachers also collaborate with science departments and may coordinate field trips or guest speakers, which adds variety but also requires detailed planning.

What is the difference between Ap Environmental Science vs Environmental Technician?

AspectAP Environmental ScienceEnvironmental Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma; AP exam or college credit beneficialHigh school diploma; often requires certifications like OSHA or EPA training
Work EnvironmentClassroom, laboratory, field studiesFieldwork, laboratories, environmental sites
Employer & Industry UsageHigh schools, colleges, environmental organizationsGovernment agencies, consulting firms, environmental companies
Common Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding academic pathways and foundational knowledgeJob roles, certifications, and fieldwork responsibilities

AP Environmental Science focuses on classroom learning, scientific principles, and environmental concepts, often serving as a foundation for further studies. Environmental Technicians perform field and lab work, applying environmental regulations and collecting data. While both roles relate to environmental work, AP Environmental Science is more academic, whereas Environmental Technician is more practical and field-oriented.

What careers can I get with environmental science?

A degree in environmental science can lead to careers such as environmental scientist, conservation scientist, environmental analyst, or sustainability specialist. These roles often involve fieldwork, data analysis, and environmental policy, and may require knowledge of GIS tools and relevant certifications.

What jobs can you go into with environmental science?

Environmental science graduates can pursue careers such as environmental analyst, conservation scientist, environmental consultant, sustainability coordinator, and environmental technician. These roles often require knowledge of ecological systems, data analysis, and environmental regulations, and may involve fieldwork, laboratory work, or policy development.

Job description

About the Role:
SiSTEM is hiring experienced science tutors to work with motivated students and families in the greater Austin area.
This is not a volume tutoring gig. Our tutors work as trusted academic partners with families who value expertise, helping students build real understanding, scientific thinking skills, and confidence in science at every level.
If you can tutor any of the following, we want to hear from you:
Elementary Science (Grades K–5):
  • Life science (plants, animals, ecosystems).
  • Earth and space science.
  • Physical science (matter, energy, force, motion).
  • Scientific method and inquiry skills.
  • Weather, water cycle, and natural resources.
  • Hands-on experiment support.
Middle School Science (Grades 6–8):
  • Life Science / Biology fundamentals.
  • Earth Science.
  • Physical Science.
  • Introduction to Chemistry concepts.
  • Introduction to Physics concepts.
  • Lab skills and scientific investigation.
High School Science (Grades 9–12):
  • Biology.
  • Chemistry.
  • Physics.
  • Environmental Science.
  • Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Earth and Space Science.

Advanced and Honors-Level Science:
  • Honors and Pre-AP Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • AP Biology.
  • AP Chemistry.
  • AP Physics 1, 2, and C (Mechanics and E&M).
  • AP Environmental Science.
  • IB Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Dual Credit College Science courses.
Test Prep Science Sections:
  • ACT Science.
  • STAAR Science (Grades 5, 8, and Biology EOC).
  • SAT Subject-Related Science Questions.
  • TSI Science-Related Sections.
  • ISEE / SSAT Science-Related Sections.
  • GED Science.
Specialized Science Support:
  • Science fair project guidance and research design.
  • Lab report writing and data analysis.
  • STEM competition preparation (Science Olympiad, etc.).
  • Pre-med and health science pathway preparation.

You do not need to tutor every level. If you specialize in elementary science only, or AP Chemistry only, or Physics only, or anything in between, we want you on our team.

About SiSTEM:
SiSTEM is an academic guidance platform that builds personalized roadmaps for students in grades K–12. Every student on SiSTEM has a plan. Tutors are a key part of that plan and are matched to students based on specific needs, not random availability.

We started as a tutoring agency in Texas, grew to 300+ tutors serving 10,000+ students, and are now launching a platform that gives educators better tools, better-matched students, and the ability to build a real client base.
What You'll Do:
  • Work one-on-one with students in grades K–12 to provide focused science instruction at their level.
  • Help students develop deeper conceptual understanding, not just memorize facts for the test.
  • Build scientific reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Make abstract concepts concrete through clear explanations, real-world connections, and structured practice.
  • Identify and close gaps in foundational science knowledge that are holding students back.
  • Align your sessions with each student's broader academic roadmap through SiSTEM's planning tools.
  • Communicate with families on progress and strategy when appropriate.
  • Maintain high standards of preparation and professionalism.
What We're Looking For:
We are selective about who joins the SiSTEM team.
Strong candidates typically have:
  • 3+ years of teaching, tutoring, or academic mentoring experience in science.
  • Deep expertise in at least one of the science subjects listed above.
  • Experience working with motivated students who are in honors, Pre-AP, AP, gifted, or test prep settings.
  • A track record of helping students improve grades, build confidence, or master concepts they previously struggled with.
  • Clear, patient communication and the ability to make science click for students who think they're "not a science person".
  • Professional reliability.
Bonus: current or former science teachers, scientists, engineers, medical professionals, or STEM researchers who tutor, educators with degrees in biology, chemistry, physics, or science education, tutors with experience coaching science fair or STEM competitions.

Why Tutors Join SiSTEM:
  • You set your own rates. And you keep 100% of what you earn.
  • Matched with students who fit your expertise. No random assignments. Students are matched to you based on subject, grade level, learning needs, and your teaching strengths.
  • Bring your current students with you. Already have clients? Add them to the platform for free. Use SiSTEM's tools to manage your existing students alongside new ones at no extra cost.
  • Families are already invested. SiSTEM parents are paying for a plan. They're engaged, responsive, and serious about their child's growth.
  • We handle the marketing. You don't have to find clients. We bring families to you.
  • Tools to manage your business. Scheduling, session tracking, and student relationship tools built into the platform.
  • Build a long-term client base. Students on SiSTEM stay for years, not weeks.
