Job description

DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM OPERATOR

Northeastern REMC is seeking a Distribution System Operator or Senior Distribution System Operator to join our team! In this role, you'll support the real‑time monitoring and operation of our electric distribution system to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of service. You'll also work to ensure system reliability by utilizing communications and electronic monitoring systems to identify abnormal conditions, coordinate planned and emergency work, dispatch field resources, and assist with service restoration activities.

This position may be filled at either the Operator or Senior Operator level based on candidate qualifications and experience. Annual salaries start at $70,000 for Distribution System Operator and $90,000 for Senior Distribution System Operator. QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent required, associate or bachelor’s degree in a business-related field is a plus.
  • Experience in electric utility operations, dispatching, line work, or a related technical field preferred for Operator position. A minimum of 2 years’ prior experience as a Distribution System Operator is required for Senior Operator role.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret system maps, one-line diagrams, and switching instructions preferred, but previous experience not required for Operator position. A minimum of 2 years’ prior experience is required for Senior Operators.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, particularly in high pressure or time sensitive situations.
  • Strong situational awareness, with ability to adhere to established operating procedures and safety standards in varying circumstances.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with professionalism and tact and maintain composure and de-escalate in difficult situations.
  • Good computer skills with ability to learn and become proficient in a variety of systems including the SCADA grid monitoring system, electric meter (AMI) and vehicle monitoring (AVL) systems, as well as outage and mapping software (OMS and GIS).
  • Good organizational and time management skills; maintains appropriate sense of urgency in prioritizing and responding to service requests and balancing other tasks and goals as required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating integrity, positivity, and respect for others; able to collaborate well within the team and cross functionally.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitor the electric distribution system for alarms, abnormal conditions, and equipment status changes using SCADA and other operational tools.
  • Track, coordinate, and document all planned and emergency work affecting the distribution system.
  • Receive, prioritize, and dispatch outage calls, work assignments, and field activities to line crews, troubleshooters, and other operational personnel.
  • Assist in service restoration efforts by analyzing system conditions, supporting fault isolation, and coordinating switching and load‑transfer activities.
  • Maintain accurate and timely operational logs, system status updates, and communication records in accordance with company policies.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with internal departments, field crews, and external stakeholders to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules, tagging procedures, and operating practices to ensure personnel and system safety.
  • Support emergency response efforts, including storm restoration and after‑hours operational needs, as required. 

In addition to the above listed job responsibilities, Senior Distribution System Operators will also:

  • Facilitate, track, and assist with training of lower-level dispatchers and other employees.
  • Assist in drafting training materials, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain and update audits and metrics on dispatch performance.
  • Upon supervisor/manager approval, fill in as duty supervisor and assist with major restoration efforts.
  • Fill in for Dispatch Manager as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in an office environment with prolonged periods of sitting and continuous use of a computer, telephone, and multiple communication systems. The work environment may be fast-paced and require performing under pressure at times. Will be required to work in a 24/7 rotating shift schedule and to be available for on-call shift coverage and call-in work during power outages.
