What does an antenna mechanical design engineer do?

An Antenna Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing the physical structure and components of antennas to ensure optimal performance and durability. They use CAD software and engineering principles to create prototypes, select appropriate materials, and ensure that antennas meet mechanical, thermal, and environmental requirements. These engineers collaborate closely with electrical engineers and production teams to integrate antennas into larger systems and oversee the manufacturing process. Their work is essential in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and defense, where reliable antenna performance is critical.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an antenna mechanical design engineer?

To thrive as an Antenna Mechanical Design Engineer, you need strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, antenna theory, and materials science, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering. Proficiency with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis (FEA) tools, and simulation platforms is commonly required. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure robust antenna designs that meet performance, reliability, and manufacturability standards in demanding engineering environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by antenna mechanical design engineers when integrating antennas into complex devices?

Antenna Mechanical Design Engineers often encounter challenges related to balancing the antenna's performance requirements with the mechanical constraints of the overall device. This can include fitting antennas into limited spaces, ensuring structural integrity, and managing issues like thermal expansion or vibration. Collaboration with electrical engineers and product designers is crucial to optimize placement and minimize interference. Staying updated on new materials and manufacturing techniques also helps address integration hurdles and improve performance.

What is the difference between Antenna Mechanical Design Engineer vs RF Mechanical Engineer?

AspectAntenna Mechanical Design EngineerRF Mechanical Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning mechanical components of antennas and related structuresDesigning mechanical aspects of RF systems and modules
Required SkillsMechanical design, antenna theory, CAD, materialsMechanical design, RF principles, thermal management
Work EnvironmentTelecommunications, aerospace, defense industriesWireless communication, telecommunications, aerospace

The Antenna Mechanical Design Engineer primarily focuses on designing the mechanical aspects of antennas, ensuring structural integrity and optimal performance. In contrast, the RF Mechanical Engineer works on mechanical components of RF systems, including modules and enclosures. Both roles require mechanical design skills and industry-specific knowledge, but their core responsibilities differ based on the system components they support.

Position Summary

Qorvo’s Antenna Technologies team is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to develop mechanical and thermal solutions for advanced antenna products, supporting phased array modules, antenna arrays, RF components, and prototype hardware from design through validation.

Responsibilities

A candidate in this position will be trained and expected to perform the following duties shortly after joining the antenna team:

  • Design mechanical housings, heat sinks, and support structures for electronic printed circuit boards using 3-D CAD modeling tools.
  • Evaluate fabrication approaches and communicate mechanical manufacturing cost and schedule impacts.
  • Trade mechanical design performance across cost, performance, and schedule constraints in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Support design of test and interface structures for antenna products with defined mechanical interfaces.
  • Apply thermal design fundamentals, including heatsink design and thermal interface material selection and recommendations.

A candidate in this position will be trained and expected to perform the following duties 1-2 years after joining the antenna team:

  • Perform CFD thermal simulations and develop cooling solutions, including cold plates, heat sinks, and TIMs, for high-power RF components.
  • Run FEA simulations to verify survivability under vibration, shock, and thermal cycling per MIL-STD-810 standards.
