What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Annotator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Annotator, you need excellent attention to detail, strong reading comprehension, and familiarity with data labeling or annotation guidelines, often supported by a high school diploma or relevant experience. Proficiency with annotation platforms and tools such as Labelbox, Prodigy, or basic spreadsheets is typically required. Strong communication skills, time management, and the ability to follow precise instructions help individuals stand out in this position. These skills ensure high-quality, accurate data annotation, which is crucial for training reliable AI and machine learning models.

What are some common challenges faced by annotators, and how can they be managed effectively?

Annotators often encounter challenges such as maintaining accuracy while handling repetitive tasks, interpreting ambiguous data, and meeting tight deadlines. To manage these challenges, it's important to develop strong attention to detail, take regular breaks to avoid fatigue, and seek clarification from team leads when instructions are unclear. Collaborating with peers and participating in review sessions can also help improve consistency and resolve uncertainties in data labeling. Many organizations provide training and feedback to help annotators continuously refine their skills.

What are annotator jobs?

Annotator jobs involve labeling, tagging, or adding metadata to data such as text, images, audio, or video. This work is crucial for training artificial intelligence and machine learning systems, as annotated data helps computers learn to recognize patterns and make decisions. Annotators must pay close attention to detail and generally follow specific guidelines to ensure consistency and accuracy in their work. These jobs can be found in various industries, including technology, healthcare, and autonomous vehicles.

What is the difference between Annotator Job vs Data Labeler?

Job description

About Overland AI
Founded in 2022 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Overland AI is transforming land operations for modern defense. The company leverages over a decade of advanced research in robotics and machine learning, as well as a field-test forward ethos, to deliver combined capabilities for unit commanders. Our OverDrive autonomy stack enables ground vehicles to navigate and operate off-road in any terrain without GPS or direct operator control. Our intuitive OverWatch C2 interface provides commanders with precise coordination capabilities essential for mission success.
Overland AI has secured funding from prominent defense tech investors including 8VC and Point 72, and built trusted partnerships with DARPA, the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Special Operations Command. Backed by eight-figure contracts across the Department of Defense, we are strengthening national security by iterating closely with end users engaged in tactical operations.
Role Summary
Overland AI is looking for a meticulous and spatially-aware 3D Data Annotator to join our team. You will work directly with 3D data captured from our autonomous vehicle platforms, providing the high-quality, ground-truth annotations that drive our AI models.
This role requires a strong, intuitive understanding of 3D space. It is an excellent fit for professionals who already have experience navigating complex spatial data, such as those with backgrounds in GIS, game level design, 3D modeling, or architecture.
Key Responsibilities
  • Use specialized software tools to accurately label and annotate objects, terrains, and surfaces within complex 3D datasets.
  • Interpret raw point cloud data and 3D environments captured by our autonomous vehicle sensor suites.
  • Maintain strict adherence to annotation guidelines to ensure high standards of data quality and consistency.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to refine labeling guidelines and provide feedback to improve tooling workflows.
  • Identify and document edge cases, anomalies, or unexpected variables within the collected sensor data.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience in 3D annotation, 3D modeling, GIS, level design, architectural drafting, or related spatial data field
  • Demonstrated experience using at least one 3D software tool (e.g., Blender, Maya, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Unreal Engine, Unity, CloudCompare, or similar)

Desired Qualifications & Experience
  • Direct experience with LiDAR point cloud processing, photogrammetry workflows, or autonomous vehicle sensor data
  • Proven ability to interpret and manipulate point cloud data, 3D meshes, or volumetric datasets
  • Demonstrated proficiency in navigating, manipulating, and interpreting 3D spatial environments.
  • Track record of producing annotation, modeling, or drafting work that meets defined quality standards and specifications
  • Proven ability to follow technical guidelines and maintain consistency across large datasets (demonstrated through prior work samples or references)
  • Familiarity with version control or annotation quality assurance processes
  • Experience collaborating with engineering or data science teams in an iterative development environment
  • Prior experience working specifically with autonomous vehicle data, LiDAR point clouds, or photogrammetry.
  • Familiarity with common 3D, GIS, or engine software tools (e.g., Blender, Maya, AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Unreal Engine, Unity).

Location
This position will be located on-site in Seattle, WA.
Compensation
The annual base pay for this position is $90,000 - $130,000
Benefits
  • Equity compensation
  • Best-in-class healthcare, dental, and vision plans
  • Flexible PTO
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Parental leave
