Annotation information

What is an annotation?

An annotation job involves labeling or tagging data, such as text, images, audio, or video, to help train artificial intelligence and machine learning models. Annotators manually or semi-automatically add metadata, such as identifying objects in images, transcribing speech, or categorizing text. This process improves AI accuracy by providing high-quality training data. Annotation work is crucial for industries like autonomous driving, healthcare, and natural language processing.

What are the typical projects or tasks an annotation specialist works on?

Annotation specialists typically work on projects involving the labeling and categorizing of data—such as images, videos, audio, or text—to train machine learning models. Weekly tasks may include reviewing raw data, applying specific tagging guidelines, performing quality checks on completed annotations, and collaborating with team members or machine learning engineers to ensure accuracy and consistency. Frequent feedback sessions and ongoing updates to annotation instructions are common as project requirements evolve. This role often requires close teamwork and clear communication within a collaborative environment, especially for large-scale or rapidly changing projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the annotation position?

Excelling in an Annotation role generally requires keen attention to detail, strong analytical abilities, and a high level of accuracy, often backed by a relevant educational background. Familiarity with annotation tools, data labeling software, and sometimes basic programming or data management platforms is valuable. Effective time management, consistency, and clear communication are soft skills that differentiate top performers. These competencies are crucial to ensuring data quality and supporting the development of machine learning and AI systems.

Job description

About Treeswift
In the face of rising threats, increasing pressure on affordability, and unprecedented demand for power, Treeswift empowers energy companies to modernize their field work to meet the growth and challenges ahead.
We build physical AI for the field worker: whether on foot or in a vehicle, our technology is an ironman suit for engineers, linemen, and vegetation crews: same worker, same boots on the ground, now operating at 10x productivity. Our platform is powered by cutting edge hardware, sensors (LiDAR, camera, etc...), AI and software designed to revolutionize work in the toughest environments.
Since our first pilot with a utility in June 2024, we've grown fast, now working with three of the five largest utilities in the US. To date, our technology has enabled our customers to reduce wildfire risk, regulatory and outage risk from vegetation, avoid delays and cost overruns in new construction, and accelerate recovery from severe storms.
To tackle this challenge, we are bringing together a team of mission-driven experts with deep industry experience in robotics (Penn, Caltech, CMU) and enterprise software development (Palantir, Stripe, Oracle, MongoDB). We have raised funding from leading investors including Penny Pritzker's Inspired Capital.
We are headquartered in midtown Manhattan, with additional offices in San Francisco and Philadelphia.
Our growth is only accelerating. We're looking for deeply curious and highly ambitious people who want to have a real world impact. Come build the future of (field) work with us.
The Position:
As a Data Annotator at Treeswift, you'll play a crucial role in transforming raw sensor data into insights our utility customers rely on to keep the power on and communities safe. By meticulously analyzing and annotating 3D environments, you will directly influence the accuracy of the models that empower field crews to work smarter and faster. We're hiring for this role to scale our data operations as our technology sees rapid adoption across major US utilities.
What You'll Do:
  • Annotate 3D wire spans using our internal tools to generate high-quality datasets, with training provided to set you up for success.
  • Ensure data integrity by identifying, documenting, and reporting distortions, doubling, or classification errors within visualizations.
  • Partner with a cross-functional team of engineers, QA leads, and field technicians via Slack to streamline workflows and meet project goals.
  • Execute on critical project priorities to deliver accurate, actionable insights for utility infrastructure projects across the country, ensuring reliability in every deliverable.

Who You Are:
  • You have a sharp eye for detail and are comfortable working solo on focused, repetitive tasks with high accuracy
  • You are process-oriented, with experience in data entry, data processing, and maintaining detailed records
  • You are comfortable using computer systems and new software technologies effectively
  • You have strong attention to visual detail, with an ability to identify and flag subtle anomalies
  • You have familiarity with tools like Google Sheets or Airtable
  • You are dependable, capable of following through on deadlines with minimal oversight, and thrive in structured, project-based environments
  • No technical engineering background is required; we provide comprehensive training for the role
  • Ability to commute to our San Francisco office at least twice a week.

Bonus Points For:
  • Experience manipulating 3D environments or gaming is a plus
  • Exposure to utility, energy, or infrastructure industries
  • Creativity with an eye for where day-to-day workflow could be improved.
  • Doesn't get stuck when facing subjective decisions, and knows when to escalate thoughtfully.

What we offer:
  • A pay rate of $25 per hour with opportunity for overtime.
  • Bi-weekly pay scheduled
  • Project-based work, with steady volume for the rest of the year
  • Snacks, goodies, and team lunches provided twice a week to keep you fueled and connected with your colleagues.

What We Value
  • Mission first. We value team members who are focused on working towards the best outcomes for the customer and the business.
  • Curiosity. We are constantly learning - from each other and from our customers. We aren't afraid to learn we were wrong in the process and adapt our approach accordingly.
  • Owners mindset. If you see an opportunity for improvement, run with it. We believe that good ideas can come from anywhere, no matter your role.

Must be ready and able to work in the San Francisco area to be considered for this role.
The estimated compensation for this role is $25 per hour. Final compensation is determined by skills, experience, qualifications, and location, and does not include the value of any bonuses, benefits, or long-term incentives. This range is disclosed in compliance with the New York City Human Rights Law and applies to NYC-based roles. Compensation may vary for candidates located outside of New York City.
Treeswift is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We provide employment opportunities without regard to age, race, color, ancestry, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, veteran status, or any other protected status in accordance with applicable law.
