Job description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Café Associate is a full-time Non-Exempt seasonal employee of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands. The position is responsible for assisting in daily food service operations and scheduled events in the Visitor Center Cafe under the supervision of the Retail Manager.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Performs daily café operating procedures and tasks, including but not limited to opening and/or closing the café for regular business hours, which includes locking and/or unlocking the café doors, clean-up and recordkeeping.
  • Assists with food service operations related to scheduled events in the Visitor Center facility.
  • Selects and prepares food which may include operation of microwave oven and/or toaster for warming muffins, cookies and/or breads; brewing coffee and espresso (which includes frothing milk); uses soup warmer; using sharp knives to cut, slice and chop vegetables, breads and sandwiches; and opening and closing refrigerator for storage and retrieval of food products.
  • Rings sales on cash register, which includes making change for customers or using credit card machine as method of payment, counting and verifying cash and daily sales against written records, writing daily sales reports.
  • Washes utensils, china and plastic service ware manually and/or with commercial automatic dishwasher; general housekeeping in the Café kitchen and dining areas, which includes washing, wiping, and scrubbing various work surfaces such as stainless steel and glass, clearing dirty dishes from dining room tables, wiping table tops and chairs, sweeping, mopping and emptying trash can.
  • Works with the public and clients to facilitate a pleasant overall Café experience with emphasis on excellent food service, ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Handles any problem tactfully, courteously and in accordance with established policies and procedures. Reports any problems or unusual incidents to the Retail Manager in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Works cooperatively with Retail Manager & Café Lead and others to prepare and serve quality meals and snacks.
  • Assists supervisory staff with receiving food and related stock items with proper storage procedures.
  • Places safety as a top priority.
  • Performs inventory control by counting food items, checking and maintaining proper par levels on each food item, and assisting in ordering appropriate amounts of food products.
  • Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is an essential function of this job.
  • Ability to work a designated shift Wednesday - Sunday when requested due to operational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Café Associate will have the following experience:

  • High school diploma or general education (GED) required.
  • Two to three years of high volume food sales experience
  • Possession of an unencumbered driver's license.
  • Obtain and maintain a Riverside County Health Department Food Handler's Card
  • Must be able to operate a computerized POS system
  • Knowledge of food service industry procedures, practices and standards related to operations, customer service, sanitation and public relations.
  • Knowledge of food preparation and handling in a restaurant, and/or catering setting which includes using microwave oven, toaster, coffee maker, espresso machine, sharp knives for cutting, slicing and chopping, dishwashing machine, food cooking timers, cash register, broom, mop and cleaning methods.
  • Ability to communicate and follow instructions effectively, both orally and in writing and work independently and as part of a team.
  • Availability to work holidays, weekends, some evenings and maintain flexible hours.
