What is an animation director?

Animation Directors are creative professionals who oversee the visual development and production of animated projects such as films, TV shows, or video games. They manage teams of animators, guide the artistic direction, and ensure that the animation aligns with the project's vision and story. Animation Directors collaborate closely with producers, writers, and other departments to maintain consistency and quality throughout the animation process. Their role is crucial in bringing characters and worlds to life in a cohesive and engaging manner.

What does an animation director do?

An animation director is responsible for performing and overseeing a number of creative duties during the design, production, and post-processing of an animation. You may work at a film studio or video game company, collaborating with writers, illustrators, and visual designers to develop stories and graphics, and to define guiding aesthetic principles. You work closely with voice actors, animators, and sound design artists to create the final product, such as an animated movie, web short, TV show, or animation for a website.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an animation director, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Animation Director, you need a strong background in animation principles, storytelling, visual design, and often a degree in animation or related fields. Proficiency with animation software such as Adobe After Effects, Maya, Toon Boom, or Blender, along with experience in project management tools, is typically required. Leadership, creative vision, and excellent communication are essential soft skills for guiding teams and collaborating with clients or stakeholders. These skills ensure cohesive, high-quality animations delivered on time, aligned with the project's creative goals.

What are some common challenges animation directors face when leading a team on a large project?

Animation Directors often encounter challenges such as aligning the creative vision across a diverse team, managing tight production schedules, and ensuring consistent animation quality throughout the project. Balancing creative input from animators, storyboard artists, and producers while adhering to budget and time constraints can be demanding. Effective communication, regular feedback sessions, and strong organizational skills are essential for overcoming these challenges and delivering a cohesive final product.

OVERVIEW OF THE COMPANY

JOB DESCRIPTION

FOX Television Stations (FTS) is seeking a new executive leadership position to unify and elevate our brand and marketing functions across our portfolio of stations and streaming platforms. The SVP, Brand & Marketing will be the senior creative and marketing leader for FTS, owning the visual identity, creative production and audience growth strategy for one of the largest local media groups in the country; which includes our 29 broadcast stations, FOX Local, and LiveNOW from FOX.

This role serves as the senior creative and marketing partner to station leadership across all FTS markets, leading the groupwide Creative & Graphic Production Hub and Marketing & Growth team. The position equips local teams with the strategy, tools, resources, and guidance needed to drive marketing performance, grow audiences, and deepen engagement with viewers and users.

IS THIS YOU?

  • You always put the viewer first. Every creative decision, every campaign, every workflow improvement is evaluated through the lens of whether it makes the experience better for the people consuming your content.
  • You thrive in a complex, multi-platform environment and know how to build systems and structures that make creative work scalable.
  • You are as comfortable presenting to a room of executives as you are diving into a campaign brief or reviewing a motion graphics package.
  • You see marketing as an opportunity to innovate and connect, not simply a mechanism to push viewers toward a product.
  • You are as creative in how you solve problems as you are in how you design brands and marketing strategies.
  • You believe great content is often the most powerful marketing tool available, and that a talent's authentic presence can do more for a brand than any traditional promo.

A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Define and drive the overall creative vision and brand direction for FOX Television Stations across all 17 markets, FOX Local and LiveNOW from FOX; ensuring a consistent and high-quality visual identity across all platforms.
  • Own accountability for the quality, consistency, and throughput of all group-level brand assets, broadcast graphic systems, design packages, and marketing materials.
  • Build and execute multi-platform paid and organic marketing strategies spanning broadcast, streaming, social, mobile, web, and more; all with a clear understanding of measurement and performance across both digital and traditional linear spaces.
  • Grow and develop a high-performing group of creative and marketing leaders, including the VP, Creative Agency and VP, Marketing & Growth
  • Partner with both corporate and station leadership to ensure creative and marketing strategies reflect both company priorities and local market needs
  • Champion creator content and talent-driven marketing as a core part of the brand strategy, building frameworks that help station anchors, reporters, and local personalities amplify their connection to the audience in ways that grow the brand organically.
  • Collaborate with the Digital Product team to ensure brand cohesion across FAST, CTV, mobile and other digital platforms.
  • Champion the responsible integration of AI tools and design technology to increase creative capacity and marketing effectiveness.
  • Represent Creative Services and Marketing in executive planning, budgeting, and cross-functional leadership discussions.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Extensive creative or marketing leadership experience, including senior-level responsibility for leading multiple teams and functions.
  • Proven experience building and executing multi-platform marketing strategies across live channels (broadcast and/or streaming), social, mobile, web, and audio
  • Hands-on fluency with the tools of the trade (graphic design, video editing, motion/animation, and AI tools) with enough technical depth to guide production automation and workflow innovation
  • Strong understanding of data and measurement across both digital and traditional linear environments, with experience using analytics to drive strategy
  • Experience managing paid campaigns and marketing budgets with accountability for audience acquisition KPIs and ROI
  • Experience with creator content strategies, influencer or talent-driven marketing, or social-first content programs
  • Proven track record of building and managing high-performing teams in a complex, multi-platform or multi-brand environments
  • Strong business and financial acumen, including experience overseeing departmental budgets
  • Exceptional communication and executive presence, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive alignment across a large organization
  • Editorial background and understanding of how content is created and what makes it resonate with a local audience is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with graphic systems and live production workflows(Chyron, Ross, Vizrt, or similar platforms) is a plus

Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $300,000.00-325,000.00 annually. This role is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents.
