Veterinary Technician, Registered

Under general supervision, the Veterinary Technician, Registered, assists a Veterinarian in healthcare of and surgeries for animals brought into the shelter and the spay/neuter clinic: performs a range of para-professional and housekeeping duties to include conducting pre-operative exams, inducing and observing reaction to anesthesia, monitoring recovery after surgery, dispensing medications or treatments; maintaining medical supplies; and performing routine cleaning of medical equipment, facilities and caging. May provide lead direction to Animal Care Specialists.

This class is distinguished from the:

Animal Care Supervisor and Veterinary Technician class which plans, coordinates, supervises, and participates in daily operations and activities of the animal shelter, to include supervising assigned staff and maintaining, cleaning and providing care for animals in the shelter.

Animal Care Officer class which patrols assigned area of the County to pick up stray, sick, injured or dead animals on public roads, and/or to discover straying livestock; responds to and investigates all reports of animals biting people, observes animals for clinical symptoms of rabies, gathers specimens for laboratory analysis for rabies, follows up on results and releases animals after the appropriate quarantine period; etc.

Animal Care Specialist class which performs specialized work in providing care for animals in the shelter, to include feeding and caring for animals, maintaining clean and sanitary conditions, impounding animals, processing animal adoptions, treating and medicating animals, euthanizing and disposing of animals, maintaining records, and providing customer service.

One year of experience assisting a licensed veterinarian in providing medical treatment to animals, including surgical procedures and medical examinations in a veterinary hospital of shelter clinic setting.

Applicants are required to have current certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician issued by the State of California Veterinarian Medical Board.

Applicants are required to possess a valid California Driver's License, Class C.

All licenses and certificates must be kept current while employed in this class.
