Job description
Join the forefront of groundbreaking research at the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope, where we're changing lives and making a real difference in the fight against cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening illnesses. Our dedicated and compassionate faculty and staff are driven by a common mission: Contribute to innovative approaches in predicting, preventing, and curing diseases, shaping the future of medicine through cutting-edge research.
We are seeking a Clinical Veterinarian/Assistant Research Professor position in the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM). Under the direction of the CCM Director and Associate Director, you will assist in maintaining the CCM Animal Care Program, provide veterinary medical services and clinical supervision leading the CCM Veterinary Services Program, and provide consultation and training to research investigators, technicians, husbandry staff, and students.
The CCM contributes to the mission of COH/BRI by advancing animal and human health through excellent service, education, and research with compassion and respect for all species. Specifically, CCM promotes animal welfare (animal health and well-being) and humane animal care and use, provides comparative medicine and veterinary medicine expertise, and improves the quality and integrity of animal-based biomedical and translational research.
As a successful candidate, you will:
Provide comprehensive veterinary medical care and emergency support for a wide range of research animal species, including participation in after-hours, weekend, and holiday on-call rotations.
Lead and supervise veterinary and animal health staff by managing schedules, assigning responsibilities, training team members, and conducting performance evaluations.
Oversee daily operations of the Veterinary Services Program, providing expertise in animal research procedures, biomethodology, anesthesia, analgesia, surgery, experimental design, and animal models.
Collaborate with leadership to manage animal transfer programs, develop staff training initiatives, and ensure adherence to institutional, NIH, USDA, and AAALAC requirements.
Train laboratory animal medicine residents, fellows, and research staff in laboratory animal science, research techniques, and regulatory best practices.
Support IACUC activities by reviewing animal protocols, conducting facility inspections, developing policies and guidelines, delivering training, and communicating committee decisions to investigators.
Ensure institutional compliance with federal, state, and accrediting agency regulations while contributing to AAALAC accreditation efforts and continuous program improvement.
Represent the institution through professional organizations, conferences, collaborative research initiatives, and the advancement of best practices in laboratory animal care and use.
Your qualifications should include:
DVM/VMD degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited institution
Current licensure in at least one state, eligibility for licensure in California, and be board certified or board eligible in laboratory animal medicine (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine).
Advanced training and evidence of productivity in collaborative research are highly desirable.
Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with staff and faculty.
Ability to provide direction and guidance to technical personnel.
Knowledge and expertise in diagnosis and treatment of diseases specific to laboratory animals and regulatory guidelines as they apply to use of animals in biomedical research strongly preferred.
