Job Summary

We are seeking an Animal Care Technician II to work at our client's facility in Washington, DC. As the Animal Care Technician II you will maintain, monitor, and document the health, production, and physical environment within the customer's varied animal care facilities for American University.  You will show the ability to provide demonstrated skill in handling and sexing laboratory animals, providing a comfortable and clean environment and accurate record keeping.

    • Responsible for the daily care, health monitoring, and husbandry of research animals, with a focus on rodents, zebra finch, zebrafish and aquatic systems
    • Ensures compliance with SOPs, animal welfare standards, and facility protocols and PPE requirements while maintaining accurate records and supporting research operations
    • Perform daily animal health observations and husbandry activities, including feeding, watering, cage changes, and health reporting
    • Monitor and maintain zebrafish life-support systems, conduct water quality testing, culture live feeds, and troubleshoot aquatic housing equipment.
    • Maintain accurate records of animal health, breeding, housing, and water quality
    • Assist with restraint, handling and manipulation of various animal species and administer basic health treatments as the direction of facility veterinarian
    • May be involved in strictly maintaining and following breeding and weaning procedures to ensure appropriate production levels
    • Receive, inspect, house and identify animals
    • Maintain supplies at acceptable levels and place orders as needed; receive supplies
Job Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Biology, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of laboratory animal care experience
  • Experience with rodents, aquatic species, and/or aviary husbandry
  • AALAS ALAT certification preferred
  • Animal husbandry, health monitoring, and handling
  • Strong documentation, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to follow detailed procedures and work effectively in a team environment

The hourly for this position is $27/hour. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills and, certifications.
