Position Summary
The Shelter Attendant is responsible for always providing compassionate and attentive care of the animals, maintain a clean healthy environment for the animals and the public, and assist with other duties as needed. Applicants may be required to work extended or irregular hours such as weekends, nights and holidays.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Animal Shelter Manager.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

• Answer phones and assist public with questions and concerns related to shelter policies and procedures regarding animals.
• Clean and maintain kennels, shelter areas and animal living areas on a daily basis.
• Janitorial duties including laundry, washing food and water dishes, shelter equipment, washing windows, facility grounds, and sweeping/mopping public areas.
• Providing a healthy, safe, clean and pleasant environment and facilities for the animals and the public.
• Follow proper safety measures and procedures when using chemicals and cleaning supplies.
• Provide each animal with food and water following approved feeding protocols.
• Help as needed with the check-in of new animals and inspection.
• Monitoring the health of the animals in the shelter, and entering the shelter, on an ongoing basis by rapidly identifying any health problems or conditions (medical or behavioral) and immediately reporting them to management.
• Treating all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion at all times, regardless of the situation or circumstance.
• Maintaining a friendly demeanor and providing good and professional customer service while assisting the public.
• Working courteously and cooperatively with other staff members, volunteers, management, and rescue partners.
• Responsible for all other duties as assigned.

• Strong written and verbal skills, including the ability to communicate skillfully and effectively with a culturally diverse staff, volunteers, and community in a professional, pleasant, respectful, courteous, and tactful manner at all times.
• Affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and a willingness to accommodate animals.
• Ability and initiative to work with minimal supervision and direction.
• Knowledge of animal behavior and common medical concerns.
• Comfort and ability in working with animals of unknown disposition and those who may exhibit medical and other problems, as well as aggressive tendencies.
• Ability to life and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances and to humanely restrain animals when necessary.
• Perform accurate clerical functions.
• Possess time management and organizational skills.
• Work under stressful conditions and manage angry individuals and unpleasant situations.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Qualifications, Education and Experience
a. High school diploma or equivalent; AND
b. Two (2) years of general work experience preferably in a field related to animal care; OR
c. An equivalent combination of education and experience that qualify the individual to have the skills to complete the required job duties.

2. Special Qualifications
a. Must be 21 years of age.
b. Possess and maintain a valid Utah Driver's License throughout employment and meet the requirements of Hurricane City's Operation of Vehicles Policy.
c. Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening, a comprehensive background check and pass the CVSA (Computer Voice Stress Analysis test.
d. All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

• Incumbents in this position will routinely come in contact with animals of all types including but not limited to dogs, cats, birds, livestock and reptiles. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Employees are occasionally required to climb or balance; employees are frequently required to stoop, kneel, squat and crouch and occasionally crawl in confined areas; employees frequently walk, sit and stand and talk and hear. Employees must regularly lift, carry, push, pull, and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• Will regularly be required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze and solve basic problems; use simple math and mathematical reasoning; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new information or new skills; work under deadlines with interruptions; and interact effectively and appropriately with City staff, other organizations and the public.

The employee may be exposed to dead, diseased, sick, injured, unruly, vicious and/or dangerous animals in addition to exposure to parasites and infectious diseases. Will work in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is frequently loud when the employee is in the shelter areas.
• Exposure to unpredictable animal behavior
• Physical ability to operate a vehicle to travel from site to site; operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination.
• Considerable exposure to stress as a result of human behavior, including dealing with unpleasant, angry or discourteous individuals as part of the job requirements.

Condition of Employment

Employee may be required to work extended or irregular hours such as nights, weekends and holidays. Hurricane City employment can require employees to occasionally work outside of their normal job duties to assist with city sponsored events and/or projects. The employee is expected to forgo normal work duties to assist with the completion of these events and/or projects. In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the deliver and restoration of vital services.
