The Clinical Veterinarian (Hamilton, MT) is responsible for providing veterinary clinical care and research support as well monitoring colony health care for animals used the NIAID contract at the Rocky Mountain Lab Facility in BSL2-4 environments.  Maintain, monitor and document the veterinary care and support as well as behavioral enrichment within the customer's varied animal care environments. Maintain performance levels consistent with and according to company standards and the NIAID contract at the Rocky Mountain Lab Facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

• Manage health care for the animal colony.
• Perform veterinary rounds as scheduled and provide clinical care and preventive medicine support.
• Perform clinical, diagnostic and surgical support and provide anesthesia and analgesic technical expertise/advice to facilitate protocol development.
• Participates in the development and execution of the preventive medicine program. May assist in sentinel animal monitoring and other monitoring programs.
• Documents general and detailed reports of clinical observations, medical care and surgical treatments using the POMS system
• Provide animal health care guidance for veterinary services personnel as required.
• Ensure that internal and external applications, reports and other materials are prepared and submitted as required.
• May participate in the response to internal/external inspections and quality assurance audits of veterinary or animal welfare type content.
• Perform consultation and collaboration with PIs regarding animal care, health, welfare and treatment. May also consult on the planning, conducting and reporting of studies.
• Assist with writing, review and updating facility policies, veterinary care and behavioral SOP's as required.
• Perform literature searches relating to veterinary subject matters as needed.
• Help to ensure facility is in compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines and standards that relate to animal care and use (E.g. USDA, FDA, AAALAC).
• Make recommendations and assist in establishing and enhancing veterinary and animal care standards.
• May use controlled substances and be responsible for maintaining appropriate records.
• May develop new or innovative surgical techniques or other procedural improvements appropriate to research studies.
• May develop and deliver training for staff and investigators as requested by the customer.  
• Support infectious disease research by conducting physical examinations, radiography, bronchoscopy, ultrasonography, interpretation of clinical pathology and other types of clinical procedures in BSL2, BSL3 and BSL4 environments.
• Perform special projects and assist with administrative efforts as needed.
• Must be available to work extended hours beyond normal duty hours, evenings, weekends, extra shifts sometimes on short notice and be on call after hours for emergency veterinary care on a rotational basis.

• Education:  Requires doctoral degree in veterinary medicine (DVM or VMD) from an AVMA accredited program or ECFVG certification.  
• Experience:  Four years laboratory animal experience with multiple species. Nonhuman Primate (old world and new world) experience a plus.  Good clinical skills (bronchoscopy, catheterization, ultrasound, clinical path interpretation)
• Must have a thorough understanding of Animal Welfare regulations and the AAALAC accreditation process.
• Experience with an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and AAALAC is preferred.
• Experience providing training to investigators, post-doctoral students, technicians and animal caretakers in a variety of procedures involving animals and the vivarium.
• Preference for experience working with infectious agents in BSL 2- 4 environment.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
• Certification/Licensure:  Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state required. Ability to practice veterinary medicine in the work state highly desirable.  Current ACLAM board certification preferred or acquisition within two years of hire required.
• Other:  Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheet and database software. Ability to organize, prioritize work and meet deadlines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit.
• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
• Able to work in BSL 3 & 4 environment for up to 5 hours at a time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• General office and research laboratory working conditions, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, although hearing protection may be required for short periods when working with certain species.
• Will be working in ABSL2/3 animal holding rooms while working to accomplish ABSL4 clearance level. (Will be working in the BSL4 suite while training but will be accompanied always until completely trained)
• Will be working for extended periods in a high containment environment while wearing a fully enclosed pressurized suite with slightly restricted vision
• While performing the duties of this job the employee will be required to wear protective clothing (safety glasses, face shield, mask, cap, gloves, scrubs), work near toxic or caustic chemicals, work with biohazards, and/or work with live animals with risk of exposure to allergens and/or zoonotic diseases. The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, unpleasant odors, and/or wet, humid and/or extreme temperature conditions.
• May be required to wear respirator in compliance with OSHA regulations.

The pay range for this position is $180,000 - $190,000. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
