Job description

The Animal Nutrition Supervisor works under the direction of the Animal Nutritionist and oversees the day-to-day operations of the Animal Nutrition Center (ANC), including the acquisition, preparation, and delivery of food items for the animal collection and the supervision of the staff performing those duties.ย ย

Job Duties and Responsibilitiesย 

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the ANC, including the acquisition, preparation, and delivery of food items forย animalย collection.ย 
  • Provides functional supervision, operationalย assistance, and technical guidance for ANC keepers, interns, and volunteers in the performance of job tasks.ย 
  • Maintainsย ANC staff scheduling and ensuresย appropriate dailyย staffing.ย directs, organizes, prioritizes, and schedules work assignments within the section.ย 
  • Oversees animal nutrition documentationย utilizingย TRACKS and other softwareย programs;ย ensures that animal diet sheets areย maintainedย and up to date.ย ย ย ย 
  • Manages the animal food warehouse to ensure effective use of space and optimization of inventory on hand.ย 
  • Responsible for the recruitment,ย selection, development, evaluation, and performance management of direct reports.ย 
  • Collaborates in the development and implementation of standard operating guidelines, safety protocols, and emergency proceduresย in accordance withย regulatory requirements and guidelines (AZA, USDA, HACCP).ย 
  • Evaluates the condition of area facilities and equipment; generates and tracks work requests and monitors repair and maintenance work as needed.ย 
  • Assistsย in the development and implementation of preventative maintenance andย purchasingย programs toย optimizeย the use of organizational resources.ย 
  • Assistsย in the development of purchasing and inventory reports in collaboration with the purchasing department.ย 
  • Collaborates in the selection of animal food vendors and service providers, including price negotiations and establishment of price agreements.ย 
  • Collaboratesย with Animalย Nutritionist on area capital improvement planning.ย 
  • Ensures that staff are appropriately trained inย purchasingย policies and procedures.ย 
  • Participates in AZA and Nutrition Advisory Group (NAG) programs.ย 
  • Contributes to saving animals in the wild through reduction of waste, water and energy use andinspiring guests and staff to take wildlife protecting actions.ย ย 
  • Contributes to other operational priorities as needed.ย 

Education and Experienceย 

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree (BA/BS) from four-year college or university;or equivalent combination of education and experience.ย 
  • Minimum of six (6) years of experience in a zoological facility.ย ย 
  • Demonstrated background inย purchasingย and warehouse functions.ย ย 
  • Experience in acquisition, storage, and preparation of animal food items.ย ย 
  • Basic knowledge of the nutritional needs of exotic animals.ย ย ย 
  • Computerย proficiencyย with standard Microsoft Office applications,ย purchasingย systems, and animal record keeping software.ย ย 
  • Strong interpersonal, team building, and communication skills.ย ย ย 
  • Mustย possessย the ability to effectively partner with other departments and all levels of staff.ย ย 
  • Valid Texas driverโ€™s license or ability to obtain one withinย 60 daysย of employment.
