Job description

Position Summary/Purpose:

Under the direction of the Director of the Animal Shelter, the Animal Shelter Attendant is responsible for the daily care, sanitation, and maintenance of animal enclosures and common areas. This position plays a key role in ensuring the facility remains clean, safe, and welcoming for animals, staff, and visitors. The role requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of kennels, cat rooms, and critter habitats.
  • Disinfect all types of animal enclosures, including kennels and cages, according to established protocols.
  • Fill food and water buckets as scheduled.
  • Wash dishes, do laundry, and ensure supplies are properly stored.
  • Clean and maintain outdoor play areas, including removal of feces and debris.
  • Sanitize and clean cat rooms, litter boxes, and associated equipment.
  • Handle and clean enclosures for small animals and critters.
  • Assist with general shelter upkeep and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Other related duties as needed.

Other Functions:

  • Answer phone calls and provide friendly, professional assistance to visitors and adopters.
  • Assist with front-desk tasks as needed.

Supervision Received: Works under the general direction of the Director or his/her designee

Minimum Required Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the knowledge and experience to perform the work.

Knowledge, Ability and Skills:

  • Genuine compassion for and interest in the well-being of animals.
  • Basic understanding of animal care and sanitation.
  • Ability to follow directions and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Good communication and customer service skills.

Machines, Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Cleaning equipment and supplies (e.g., mops, brooms, disinfectants)
  • Laundry and dishwashing machines
  • Basic office equipment when assisting at the front desk

Job Environment

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying conditions.
