Job description

Join Animal Humane Society as a Courier/Animal Driver, where your daily work helps animals get the care, support, and second chances they deserve. In this essential role, you'll provide safe, local transport of animals and critical items between our sites-keeping operations running smoothly and directly impacting the lives of animals.
Here's a snapshot of the job:
Pay: $17.50/hour

Schedule: Part-time, up to 24 hours/week
  • 8 a.m. start time; shifts approximately 6 hours in length
  • Saturday availability required

Location: Golden Valley, MN with daily travel to our other locations in St. Paul, Coon Rapids and Woodbury
Interview Process: 1 30 minute screen with Talent Acquisition Specialist followed by a department interview with hiring team. Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check + motor vehicle report. Must have a valid driver's license.
Here's what you'd be doing:
Job Summary: The Courier I is responsible for providing local transport of animals and items between work sites.
Essential Functions
Local Transport:
  • Provide local transport of animals and items.
  • Prepare the route and vehicle for transport.
  • Complete basic preventative maintenance checks.
  • Ensure appropriate loading, unloading, and care of animals and items.
  • Plan and complete work based on the ticketing system and priorities set by the team.

Communication and Culture:
  • Communicate in a positive and professional manner with customers, other employees, and volunteers.
  • Promote a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion to make AHS a welcoming environment for all.

Technology:
  • Clock in and out of shifts using ADP.
  • Monitor AHS email and other messaging software.

Other duties as assigned.
Additional Information
Schedule and Attendance:
  • Required to be on time to scheduled shifts during operational hours which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • May be required to attend occasional off-site meetings and events.
  • Attend and participate in regular team meetings and one-on-one meetings with direct leader.

Work Environment:
  • Environment will be predominately in the vehicle and on the road between sites or other locations.
  • The vehicle will be at times loud, crowded, dirty, wet, and have strong odors.
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions including but not limited to cold, heat, rain, and snow when outside and on the road.
  • Exposure to zoonotic diseases and pests such as fleas and ticks.
  • Possibility of being bitten or scratched.

Requirements
Experience:
  • Vehicle operation experience is required.
  • Animal handling experience is preferred.

Skills:
  • Must be able to problem solve and work under general instruction while on the route.
  • Proficient with technology, specifically a working knowledge of Microsoft products.

Physical Demands:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and handle animals and other items up to 75 lbs. unassisted. For animals and other items over 75 lbs., assistance from another team member is required.

Emotional Demands:
  • Must be comfortable with the emotional aspect of work in an animal shelter environment, including the use of humane euthanasia.

Transportation:
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
