About the Position
Are you an innovative and versatile leader who is ready to serve the community and have an impact on animal welfare?
The Volunteer Manager oversees the strategic direction and daily operations of Maricopa County Animal Care & Control's volunteer program. This hands-on leadership role is responsible for building the volunteer workforce through recruitment, engagement, development, and retention while fostering a positive volunteer experience. We will look to you to drive positive change by leading volunteers and Volunteer Coordinators, removing barriers, and ensuring best practices are in place. You will collaborate with teams across all shelters to ensure consistency and to achieve the optimal outcome for each animal with the available resources. This position requires the employee to be in the office and or customer-facing for all hours worked.

We Require
  • Three years of direct volunteer management experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

Other Requirements
  • Demonstrated animal handling experience
  • Must possess, or have the ability to obtain by the time of hire, a valid Arizona Driver's License

Job Contributions
  • Responsible for developing and refining the volunteer program for Animal Care & Control
  • Provides hands-on leadership and oversight by maintaining a visible presence in shelter operations, walking the shelter, engaging with staff and volunteers, and coaching, mentoring, and resolving concerns, disciplinary matters, and performance issues
  • Recommend improvements and initiatives to the Animal Welfare Officer and lead the implementation process
  • Communicates and upholds shelter policies, procedures, and humane animal care practices to volunteers and the public, including at public events
  • Develops and oversees the administration of a volunteer recognition program
  • Provides the Animal Welfare Officer with timely, accurate operational reports and demonstrates exceptional organizational skills
  • Assists as needed with off-site events related to either the recruitment of volunteers, and works to develop corporate volunteer opportunities
  • Meets with division managers to determine volunteer needs, coordinate assignments, and address problems
  • Maintains the volunteer database and prepares reports, newsletters, and other division publications related to volunteer activities and programs
  • Represents the Department at community functions and special events; performs special projects and other duties as assigned

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office or administrative environment and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. The employee in this position may be required to exert up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly. The position requires walking or standing to a significant degree.
